Hello everyone, just finished de-winterizing my R-pod, and I discovered that I need a new
anode rode for the hot water heater. I'm having trouble finding a service center or dealer to
order the part from, any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks and have a great summer everyone..

Try Amazon. You can order http://www.amazon.com/Suburban-232767-Water-Heater-Anode/dp/B003VAYRNM?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00 - anode rods there.

The first thing I did after purchasing our 2011  177 was to toast the anode rod.  Cost me around 11 bucks to replace back in 2011.  Now they are around 15 - 17 dollars.  The part # for our (a suburban) hot water heater is 232767, it is a magnesium rod.

Surprised that after 5 years we are still on that same anode.  Maybe because it only has had well water in it, no salts or chemicals that would be found in city, municipal water.

How does one toast an anode rod?

For what it's worth, they are still doing their job if there is nothing much left of them.  They can really look like crap and still perform their function.  And for that matter, the water heater will continue to work without an anode rod.  If the anode rod is being consumed quickly though, it seems likely your water heater might rot out quickly without one.  They are pretty cheap and not too difficult to find.  Last time I changed mine I kept the old one as a spare.  Not sure exactly why....

A bit of a pet peeve is that Lowes & Home Depot sell home water heaters but not anodes for them.  And even if you could find one, the originals are practically welded on to the water heater.  Not literally, but I think the recommended tool for removing them is a 1/2 inch drive impact wrench.  Anodes are just as important in home water heaters as they are in the pods'.

From JT to TT.  My bad, you got me on that one.  Actually it was the heating element that I toasted in that I FORGOT to open the bypass to summer mode and 'toasted' the heating element lickity split by turning on the water heater with no water in it.  Soooo.   to make a short story long I did replace the heating element in 2011 and still have that same element  working today.  AND i still have the original anode, pitted somewhat but still in good condition.  Sorry about the mixup.

I would be very surprised that a 2014 needs a new anode. We are on county water, WH filled unless winterized, 6th season, still don't need to replace ours.

Can you post a picture of it? Unless it's down to nothing but the bare inner shaft all the way, it's still fine.

A lot would depend on the quality of the water. Aluminum rods would not be available if magnesium ones worked in all situations. More corrosive water can cause a magnesium anode rod to be used up faster. One should not extrapolate for everyone based on his/her personal experience. After all, look at Flint, MI.

Personally, given that there is either a magnesium or aluminum rod sacrificing itself probably means that there is magnesium or aluminum going into the hot water. For that reason, I would never drink water from the hot water tap. If I need hot water for food/drink preparation, I will start with cold water and heat it on either the gas burner or the induction cooker we purchased to carry in the R-Pod.

OK, how about this.. in 6 years, and dealing with hundreds of pods in person and on-line, I don't recall anyone needing one in that time frame unless they lost it.

Since an RV WH is no different, except for size, from a home WH, do you do this at home also? I promise you the WH in your basement has an anode rod also. Unless you are a full timer, your exposure in the Pod is miniscule compared to home and office etc..

I don't use hot water from the tap for drinking/cooking either. At home we have a reverse osmosis filter. Our drinking/cooking water goes through that. I use an inline water filter for the R-Pod since I don't want to install an RO filter there.

The cross over valve, I cannot find where they are located on my 2016 Rpod 178.  My next step is to look under the bed, have to remove the plywood there.  All I get is warm water, dealer looked at it twice, said it was ok.  Suggestions?

The cross over valve should be right next to the water heater between the hot and cold lines.

First, find the location of your hot water heater. On the outside, you can easily see where it is. Then look inside at that location. On the 179, it is under the queen bed in front. I don't know where it is located on the 178. There should be some sort of access panel. When you remove it, you will see the valves. The top and bottom should be open (parallel to the lines). The bypass valve should be closed (perpendicular to the line). If it is open, then hot and cold water mix and all you get is lukewarm water. During winterization, you want to close the top and bottom valves to isolate the water heater and open the bypass valve. This allows you to drain the water heater tank to keep the antifreeze from corroding the anode rod (and from wasting 6 gallons of antifreeze filling the heater). It allows antifreeze to flow through the hot as well as the cold water lines to protect them.

Sometimes, you just need to do things yourself.

I started doing some things myself since it is a significant 2+ hour drive to get to the dealer where I purchased the R-Pod. Besides, after seeing the quality of some things, I decided I could do better by doing it myself. I haven't tackled things like wheel bearings yet, but that will likely be soon. My mods list some of the things I have done.

A simple fix once you get to the valves, no need for Camping World. Lift the mattress, possibly remove some screws, lift up the plywood. Leave the screws out.

Thanks, first I will look in the outside storage for the access panel. Then I will try under the bed.
