Hi folks,

It looks like we are going to be using the RP-171 a lot more than we had originally planned.  Being our first RV, we were taking baby steps - only figuring in the range of a half dozen trips this summer.  To put it blunt, last week we just got blindsided by finding out that my FiL has "Stage 4".  So now we are going to attempt to go to their beach cottage every-opposite weekend during the workable season, maybe as many as 20 trips by the end of October. So to a certain degree this is going to become a towable master suite for this year. The HVAC will get heavy use, and we will use the toilet on an emergency basis, but the kitchen will see next to no use this year. My main goal is to make my wife's trips as stress free as possible during this difficult time.

These are the immediate mods I have planned:

1) Letter the Rpod - to cheer my wife up.Smile
2) Add a light blocking curtain to the master bed entry - so my wife can watch TV etc at the dinette if she is up in the middle of the night.
3) Install reverse lights - well... because light.

Any other "must have mods/fixes"? I am going to have the advantage of a shed full of tools down at the cottage, and to be honest I am going to need to distract myself a lot when thereOuch, so please suggest away...

Mostly it's a matter of making the pod more functional for your needs.. they will come to you as you use it. There are quite a few in my mods link, and a couple others here have mods linked.. Some won't apply to you, but might give you a start or idea..

Thanks. That is what I figured, the mods will become obvious as the needs evolve.

EDIT: based on the thread about the faucet, that will get proactively swapped out before our first "real" camping trip (going to the beach is this summer will be closer to Glamping...).

I would highly recommend switching to double steps. It makes it so much easier to get in or out! Especially someone who might be feeling a little weak. Search the boards for a link. I bought mine on eTrailer for less than $90.

If the goal is to make it more comfortable for the missus, then here's what I would suggest as this is what mine did to our interior.

Buy extra throw pillows to be comfortable while sitting at the dinette watching TV or lounging in bed reading.

Add decorations, pictures, and touches of home to the walls.  My wife found a large vinyl decal for the front wall at Hobby Lobby that says "Wherever we are together, that is home", they have a ton of others to choose from.  Help it to be a place of comfort where she can take refuge from the stress of dealing with a family member with cancer.

Install a wall mount iPad or tablet holder in the bedroom area, to watch movies or surf the net while relaxing.

Since it sounds like a lot of short trips, maybe skip the r-dome and go with a pop-up awning or clam enclosure that is easy and quick to put up and take down.  Include a few folding chairs to sit outside and enjoy the beach view.

All that being said I am a stage 3 Non-Hodgkins survivor myself.  I bought the camper about a year ago when I was going thru chemo.  My wife thought it was nuts, but it was on my bucket list for a long time and I wasn't sure how much time I had.  Worst case, I got a few good trips. Best case, a lot of good trips.  So far it's been best case.  I will say for sure that taking the missus camping helped relieve the stress of what she was going through with me.  Best of luck...

Thanks for the idea about the steps! My FiL will be staying in the cottage, so stairs shouldn't be an issue. OTOH my wife is only 5'4" with short legs, and this actually might be "must have" so she doesn't sprain an ankle.

Unless you have the Hood River Edition (HRE) or the 2" lift kit installed on the non-HRE-pods, the 2nd step will either be on the ground or just above it.

Thanks for all the thoughtful ideas. Many of your suggestions are in the direction of what we have been thinking, so it is great to get some first hand feedback. That is a good point about making sure she has iphone access somehow, if T-mobile isn't strong on the beach she will lose her mind. I am already planning to put a 12v LCD TV/DVD somewhere in the bedroom, so that she can turn it on for background noise during her afternoon naps (very noisy boardwalk). We were planning on skipping the R-dome, and just getting a nice portable screenhouse from Cabelas. But I really like your idea of incorporating artwork, she was a dual major with art as secondary, maybe I will surprise her with some supplies to make some stuff for the pod while we are down there - art therapy. Best of luck to you as well.

If the T-Mobile is weak, maybe get a Verizon or AT&T Mi-Fi or other wireless hotspot, they use a lower frequency that has better coverage.  I have Verizon as my carrier and the phone has a "mobile hotspot" feature and it's worked great everywhere we have camped in Florida, but coverages can vary.   Gotta love streaming college and Monday night footballs in the dome to torment tent campers... Tongue

My sister had T-Mobile here in FL and once you got 20 miles out of town or away from an interstate highway, it was dead as a doornail for 3G/4G wi-fi service.

Just be careful, if my missus had her way, it would look like someone hosed down the inside of the pod with Pepto Bismol and bubble gum and have it looking like a New Orleans cathouse in no time.  LOL

At least we compromised and went with some neutral colors, reds and browns.

I have noticed T-Mobile seems to be more urban focused. Even in the MA suburbs the signal is weak depending on where you live, random unexplained dead spots.  My signal at home is garbage, I have to use a "wifi calling" cell router connected to the net, but I live on the far side of a granite mini-mountain with 200' of rise behind me.

We could use one up here in New England. It could be "The Platinum Pothole LTD".

For anyone that has the Jensen Bluetooth capable CD/DVD unit: if anyone knows the model # could you please let me know? Especially if it is a 2016 model, but as long as it is Bluetooth an older model should be fine.

I want to look up the manual, and see what Bluetooth functions it has. The only thing I have found is that you can control the entertainment unit with your phone. I am trying to determine if it has additional functionality, as well as options for connecting our phones for music playback.

EDIT: after searching the forum, it looks like the JWM6A from 2015 is close enough (link below) The unit appears to have USB music playback, which is my preferred method.  It seems to have Bluetooth playback too, if I want to experiment with that. This is good, streaming Pandora will be very helpful.

The unit on the 2016 R-Pods is the AWM968. I have used BT audio on it and it works great. I am considering upgrading to the JWM6A so I can run HDMI to the TV for DVD playback. It also supports an Android control app, which is of no interest to me since I have an iPhone.

I just wish we had the 12V TV instead of the AC one: the 12V TV and the JWM6A support HDMI-ARC, which means that a single HDMI connection would not only allow digital video output to the TV but also TV audio into the stereo when watching over-the-air broadcasts. That's not a deal breaker though because the stereo can't do surround sound, so an analog audio aux connection is quite sufficient.

GLBCamper,

Could you post the part number for your steps for the POD. I ordered a set that doesn't fit and need to return for the correct parts.

Thanks,

Thanks for all the great info! I am a Home Theater nut, but haven't done vehicle audio upgrades in over 20 years. I'm going to assume the inside speakers are cheapo "dual cone" type, if so I am going to upgrade those immediately to true 3-Way types if possible. Is your TV near the AVR? Just wondering because routing an HDMI cable seems ambitious, or do these units run on the mini-HDMI cables?

I think the TV and stereo are adjacent on all the R-Pod models. On the 179, the TV connections are on one short wall over the bed and the stereo is just around the corner, so access is a piece of cake.

The indoor speakers are dual cone; I haven't checked the outdoor ones, but they're marine speakers due to weather exposure. The issue with aftermarket speakers is depth: there's only about 1.5" of depth between the ceiling and the plywood over the insulation in the 179 and most better speakers are over 2" deep. The speaker can always be spaced so it doesn't mount flush against the ceiling; whether that appeals to you depends on how likely you are to hit your head on it.

I have JBL GX series 2-way speakers in my TV and really like them, so I'll probably get a pair of the appropriate size for the R-Pod. I think most people doing speaker upgrades are using 6.5" speakers, although I would think they'd be too big based on my measurements of the factory speakers. Maybe someone who has done the upgrade will chime in.

I assumed there would be a depth issue upgrading the speakers. There are some plastic retrofit collars out there for that purpose, Crutchfield has a few on their website, they usually come in black and you can paint them. I'm definitely not cutting into anything while it is under warranty, if the collars won't make it work then the project can wait a year.

One solution for a low cell signal (but not a completely absent signal) is a booster.  More info here:   http://www.wilsonamplifiers.com/cell-phone-signal-booster-guide-page - https://www.wilsonamplifiers.com/cell-phone-signal-booster-guide-page

That's the one I purchased. I guess the 179 is different, it doesn't fit. The back of the steps makes contact with the frame which causes the step not to match the original mount. It's not even close to a match.

Again, thanks for the info.

I did have to expand the back holes a bit, but other than that it fit my 177 perfectly.

I just installed one on my 179. I enlarged the rear holes in the steps, not in the frame, and it fits fine.

I need help with a mod to hide my new15 foot rhino sewer 4 inch hose, it is too long for the short 5 inch tube under the LP tank.  I need a five foot PVC Five inch pipe, can't find anyone who sells such a thing, only Four inch.  Any suggestions?

The best solution is the DWIncorp.com telescoping unit cited above. It's designed for the 15' RhinoFlex hose kit (60"). If you insist, HD etc. sells 5" square PVC fence post/caps.

Hi Podders!
Does anyone have an idea how I can get the outdoor shower to be more of a "power wash your boots" rather than the gentle rain?? Would simply changing the screen on the hand held shower head do it? I mean having smaller holes in the thing would increase the pressure. Has anyone thought about this...or just me? :-). Is a part like this available? I just thought it would be handy cuz that is primarily why I would use this feature and last time I just had to bring my muddy stuff home and hose it down in the yard. I will appreciate your thoughts and ideas!
Thanks,
Julie

There is already a recent thread about the shower attachment that seems to be favored by Podders. Go to the second page of this forum, that is where the thread is located. There are plenty of comments that should help you decide. The unit is relatively cheap for an upgrade. I plan on getting one in the summer, so we can use the outdoor shower to hose off all the beach sand and salt.

The box for my outdoor shower doesn't leave a lot of room for alternative (larger) shower heads, for one thing, and I'm not sure you'd ever get enough pressure to blast the mud off boots anyway.  Maybe.  But what about the shower and a brush of some sort?

You could test the power by taking the shower head off and holding your thumb over the end of the hose.  That might be the solution anyway.
