Topic: TV Tilt
Posted By: bburchfield
Subject: TV Tilt
Date Posted: 26 Feb 2016 at 2:24pm
Hi All,  We just picked up our 2015 model 179 a few days ago.  It didn't take long for us to realize the television was unwatchable while laying in bed due to the angle.  I looked at buying a replacement for the mounting arm, but most everything I could find would only tilt 15 degs, or 20 at most.  And I still don't think that would be enough.

So with a little head scratching and metal working, the problem is solved!  All it requires is an extra little bracket be inserted at the end of the arm, before the mounting plate that attaches to the TV.  That plate needs to be removed and rotated 90 degs.  The result is that you can tilt the TV almost straight down.  Doesn't affect the stowage or movement of the TV and swing arm at all.

I would be interested. Does it have some sort of easy way to adjust the angle? I would not want to have to dig out wrenches every time I wanted to adjust the tilt.

How much would he charge?

Sure thing!  It may be a couple of days before I talk to him again.

The tilt angle is easily adjusted by hand and will stay where you put it.  You just have to tighten the bolt enough, but not too tight, when you first install it.

^ I bought a mount similar to that one but returned it.  I like the mount that came with our R-pod.  Four screws hold it to the wall rather than two.  I didn't like the idea of making two new holes in the wall, and then leaving 4 old screw holes to try to cover up.

I'm sure after we've had the camper for a few years I'll be less timid when it comes to cutting and drilling and punching holes in it.

Consider buying this and then just using the tilt assembly on the existing mount.

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B7U8GK8 - https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B7U8GK8

You do have to ream out a couple of holes on the replacement assembly and add a couple of washers.

Status update:   Sorry for the delay in getting these done.  The "friend of a friend" who was going to do the laser cutting for me has gotten so busy he's stopped taking outside jobs.   So I had to find another - which I have.  Now it's just a matter of getting a cutting job into his schedule, and driving an hour to his shop to pick up the parts.

I'm still aiming for $15 or less per completed bracket.

Update: I just finished this install a couple of days ago.  I was wrong about the washers; they weren't needed. It took very little time to do.

If you are taking orders for this bracket, count me in!

I decided to order the setup from Amazon that The Bum recommended. It will be here tomorrow. It should be simple to swap out the mounting plates and gain the adjustment needed.

Edit: I ordered, received, and will return. The plate and tilt bracket that holds the television can't simply be removed from the mount and used to replace the original plate and non-tilt bracket. Not only is the bolt considerably smaller, but the legs of the bracket are too closely spaced to fit onto the original bracket without sawing some of the length off. Thumbs Down 'Taint happening!

I will wait until the custom bracket is finished.

Where are you trying to separate the new mount? I used only the TV plate and the bracket it attaches to, removed at the bolt closest to the TV. I did not use any arms of the new mount. All I had to do was drill out the two holes in the tilt bracket to 1/2" and bolt it in using the original mount bolt.

I'll try to swing by our storage unit and snap a photo this evening.

I think the one you used is different from the one I ordered. The linked mount in your post looks different from the one I received. The one I received was much less sturdy, only using a narrow bracket with two screws/bolts to mount it to the wall. The one linked in your description had a wider plate, much like the original that looks like it would use 4 screws/bolts like the R-Pod's original mount.

A viable option that I and others have used is this mount from Amazon. It takes less than 2 hours to swap out, it's shown in my mods thread on page 3. Only two screws to drill:

Retroactive,

That's the one I returned. I wanted to use the tilt mounting plate on the existing arm. It won't fit. The one that will fit costs more than the proposed price of the custom bracket. I'll wait for it and see what the final cost will be. Hopefully, the information will be available soon.

This is true, but the difference was only $8 or so and I've already gotten to use it on a trip.

I have some time before our next planned trip. However, if the delay is too long, I will need to do something, and will likely order the mount with the plate that will fit.

Here's the mod using the mount I bought from Amazon. The big bolt and everything to the right are from the factory mount. It doesn't tilt down as far as the One in the first post of this thread, but it makes watching TV much better from our dinette "couch".

So, what's required to get it to work? Amy cutting, bending, drilling, sawing, etc?

Just drilling out the holes on the new tilt head to fit the factory mount's bolt. The new mount's bolt is 3/8", I think, and the factory bolt is 1/2".

I did not receive a reply to my private message and there have been no announcements in this forum since February. It is safe to consider that those of us who want to add tilt to our televisions need to consider other options.
