Sorry to bring this up (again). I am extremely busy so cannot find time to research deeply on this. I want to drive from Alberta to Arizona soon. (27 hours with the foot down) After a disastrous meltdown of bearings years ago, I am always checking my hubs for heat when I stop. However, I have been unable to find out what the Forrest River /manufacturer recommendations are on the Pod wheel bearings. Dealers want anywhere from $250 to $450 to do this and since it is winter here, I cannot do it outside myself. Does anyone know or have a point of reference? | The local tire shop here also does auto repairs, and they charged me $35/wheel to do the bearings on my rpod and on my horse trailer last spring. They suggested I repeat the process ever couple of years. For two wheels I wouldn't think anything over a hundred bucks sounds very fair. |

Ditto, I used my local mechanic and it was cheap. Double ditto. RV places are high and backed up. I went to a regular mechanic, got in & out by noon, had bearings done & brakes checked & adjusted for $100.

Just be aware that some (probably most) mechanics do not torque the wheels to the proper amount, so always double-check the wheel's torque afterwards! ------------- |

Labour-wise, it should take them about an hour to do both wheels. Parts-wise, you'll need new bearing seals at a minimum which'll cost $10. If you do need new bearings, up to 1/2 hour additional of labour and $20 for parts. Here in Ontario, I'd expect it'll cost around $150-$200 out the door.

Good point. Otherwise they did a fine job but they torqued the lugs down to 300 ft lbs. No, I didn"t measure, but that"s probably not a big exageration. I will discuss totque with them when I go back. TT ------------- 2010 176 FJ Cruiser |

Thanks to all for the input. Down the road I will do it myself but may have to pay the piper this time around. Looking forward to launching with 'Dude" my Ram 1500, with "Arnie the Podinator" tagging along behind on the way to Arizona. Cheers.
