We are just leaving for a 5 week trip from Chapel Hill NC to Key West, FL. We loaded the truck and our 173 R Pod and hit the scales at our local county landfill. I went across the scales 3 times and weighed in different ways. Here is what we did:
The first time we went across, the weight distribution bars were connected. I weighed with only the truck on the scales, then moved forward with both the truck and the R Pod being weighed and finally pulled off far enough so the truck was off the scale and only the R Pod was being weighed. Truck 7500 Truck & R Pod 10660 R Pod 3140
The second weighing was exactly the same sequence except the weight distribution bars were not connected. Truck 7540 Truck and R Pod 10660 R Pod 3100
The third weight pass was with the truck only-no R Pod attached-7060.
Here is what I think it means: The truck weighs 7060 The R Pod weighs 3100 Our tongue weight is 7500-7060=440 which is 14% of gross pod weight
Here is my biggest question-- I am confused about the 40 pound differences in the pod and truck weights when weighed with and without the bars attached. It seems to me that we are transferring 40 pounds of weight via weight distribution back to the pod from the truck weight-isn’t this backwards? Or is some of the weight distribution involved in the tongue weight?
I would appreciate any comments about what this means.

The WDH is designed to take weight from the back of your TV and distribute it to the trailer axle and front axle of tow vehicle. It works sort of like a bridge between trailer axle and TV front axle. I believe this is a correct explanation someone correct me if I am wrong. I think that your weights at the scales show that this is what is happening. Could it be possible that transferring some of the weight to the trailer would add to it's stability. I will be following this thread closely because I am thinking about getting a WDH before leaving for our 3 month winter trip.

It appears you are calculating your tongue weight? I take it you didn't actually set the tongue down on the jack and weigh it alone? When we picked up our Pod 2 years ago I weighed it on the way home. Can't find my weight ticket at the moment but I think it was: 7700 for my Colorado and Pod total 4700 for the truck axles 3000 for the Pod Axle This is with dual batteries and dual LP bottles. Nothing else but the poop chutes in the Pod. Found out later there was also at least 10 gal of water on board in the water tank making it at least 16 total water on board with the water heater full. It was at a truck stop and it started to get busy and I forgot to drop the trailer to weigh it by itself. Would have been nice to drop the jack down and get the total weight and then a separate axle and jack weight. ------------- Bruce & Donna in the Sno Pod (and Brewer too) 2011 RP 177 |
