I recently came across this site and have been doing a lot of reading and have already asked a couple questions, thought I would do a better job of introducing myself. Looking at purchasing an rpod once we decide on which one fits our needs best and is available. Haven't decided on new or used (don't see many available)
I'm a retired high school science teacher (retired in '11) and have been camping our entire lives. Last couple years we've been motorcycle (Yamaha Venture) camping pulling a cargo trailer with all our gear. We've enjoyed meeting up with other MC campers thru a website (motocampers.com) at various campgrounds around the country.
Have also been looking to upgrade to at TT last couple years to expand our options (taking grandkids, etc) Have been looking at rpods as a good option to pull with our Tacoma (07 V6) which I already had from boating days (ski boat was passed on to son in another state) I really like my truck don't want to have to get a new TV. Would love to hear from others that might use a Tacoma as their TV. Will mostly be pulling the pod in and around GA.
Would love to hear why folks picked their particular pod and if they had it to do over would they pick the same one or a different one
Another hobby is building and flying rc planes (electric), would be nice to be able to carry a couple with me on trips, (hard to do on a motorcycle which is more fun traveling on/in than 4 wheel)
From what I've read so far this site seems like a lot of nice helpful folks. We look forward to possibly meeting folks in the future, Meach & Maggie

Hi and welcome. I'll leave it to Taco owners to chime in on their capabilities as TVs. As far as which model we chose and why, although we're more than 10 years away from retirement, our kids are grown, so it's just the two of us (plus a dog). We purchased a 177 last year, and it suits us perfectly. We like having the table set up all the time, and a dedicated bed. We had been considering a 171, but the slide-out on the 177 really opens up the interior. The 178 gives you a bit more room (and weighs a bit more), so we perhaps would have gone with that model but got a sweet deal on our 177.
Find a dealer and get inside as many models as you can. That's the best way to determine which one will fit your needs and wants.

I don't think you will regret buying an R-Pod. You might also want to check out the R-Pod Owners group on Facebook for additional information.

Thanks for reply, have spoken with one owner using a Taco as TV with a 179, will see if any others chime in. Have looked thru a 178, 179, 183G, and maybe a 182G (it was gone on a return visit to look in more detail) Haven't seen one yet WITHOUT the slideout yet. We're in no rush, will look at diff. models as we find em. Realizing larger, more options means more wt.

We moved from a popup to the pod because we were tired of the extra setup/teardown, and we needed to pull it with the minivan we had. The 171 was the lightest option and none of the slide-out models existed yet (they announced the first models the week we picked our pod up). I liked the 177 which has the same layout at the 171, but at the time I was focused on weight due to the TV's (tow vehicle's) limits so I probably would have stuck with the 171 even if the 177 had been an option. I like several of the newer models.
Now that I have a camper with a slide-out, I wouldn't buy one without.

Check to see if your Tacoma has the factory towing package. Toyota really did this right in this truck because it isn't just a hitch and lights.
Towing package has a Class IV hitch, oil cooler, transmission cooler, heavier alternator, and it is prewired for a brake controller. It can tow up to 6500 lbs.
My boat weighs about 4500 pounds. I have a 1000 pound trailer for it. I am pulling at least 5500 pounds with the Tacoma with no issues at all. It can feel sluggish in the hills but it does okay. With my boat fully loaded for cruising I am guessing my total weight may be closer to 6000 pounds btw.

Bought the truck when TV for boat died, later retired boat (gave it to my son), when looking to tow TT learned more about the tow package, found out my truck did not have it, did come with hitch & flat 4 which was fine for my boat, I learned easy way to tell if taco has tow package is to look for factory 7 round. I read about supposedly truck sales people saying trucks had a tow package and showing hitch when it fact trucks didn't.
My hitch (Curt class III) still has a sticker from hitch dealer (no longer in business) so was after market. Wanna keep loaded TT around 4K to which there are many TT 2500-3000 lbs. Are many more models to choose from now compared to just a couple years ago when we were looking.
Will prob get a scangauge II and just monitor my tranny temp on trips and then add a tranny cooler if needed, not having tow pack options I don't think will be that big a deal. The connector for brake controller was there, already had a Prodigy controller I was going to use on my MC trailer but didn't, just need to hook in a 7 round connector now.
