Hello R podders,
Surprise, surprise. I was planning to buy an Rpod next spring, but I just couldn't pass up the near cherry 2014 model 178 my dealer had for sale. I'm still swooning and busy stowing aboard things needed for camping. I plan to visit a lot of state and federal parks and do astrophotography.
I am thinking about the Dometic Rdome shade canopy room, but $600 is a bit pricey. Do any of you guys know of a used one for sale or something just as good out there?
Happy to be an owner.

Check out Paha Que:

They've got a couple options for the Rpod, and their awning, at about $200 less than the Rdome is a great deal....plus it's made in the USA, not made in China.....   Smile

Hey Doc,

I just took delivery of a 2016 179, today.  I am also going to use it largely for Star Parties and astrophotography.  We must almost be neighbors... My zip is 15228.

Maybe I'll see you under the stars, somewhere!

Best regards,
Craig... In the AstroPod

Someone posted that they got their awning from bearcreekcanvas.com and that they were pleased.

I looked at the Paha Que. I think it's a great solution. Thanks for the tip!

Welcome.  We mostly just used two EZ-ups.  There are times where you can't easily set up the dome (or can't at all), like close-by trees or slopes, but you can put the EZ-ups anywhere.

Hi Craig,
I can't believe there is another astrophotographer in an R pod so close to Greensburg. It would be a pleasure to bump into you at a star party and compare notes. I use a Canon Rebel model ts on my Meade lx75 astrograph. Just starting out in this endeavor although I've been stargazing since the 60's. Ever been to Cherry Springs? I'm doing my maiden voyage with the Rpod at Keystone state park the week after labor day.
Clear skies,

Hi Doc,

I have never stayed at Cherry Springs.  My first r-pod outing will be this coming weekend at the Almost Heaven Star Party in West Virginia.  Then next month I am tackling a trip to the Oklahoma panhandle for the OkieTex Star Party.  It will be my 4th time there, but first time sans observatory tent.

It's been a great year for me for astronomy upgrades... Besides the big one (r-pod), I also upgraded to an AP1100 mount, a TEC140, and an SBIG STT8300.  I've been trying to do astrophotography for about 7 years, now.

I keep a sporadically updated blog that links to a few of my images at  http://Www.MagicShirtAstro.com - http://Www.MagicShirtAstro.com

Hope to run into you, as well!  At least you will be easy to find in your pod.  If you ever want to talk astrophotography, please feel free to contact me: cgsathome@yahoodotcom

Hi Craig,
I wanted to do the West Virginia Almost Heaven SP but just couldn't schedule it. I would appreciate it if you would let me know how it went, especially the new Rpod experience. Maybe a photo or two would help me get this party in next year.
Thanks for your reply and kind offer to share astrophotography tips.

Keep your eyes peeled on the flea market section here and on the facebook group.  Occasionally, folks that had the dome come with the camper decide they don't like them and put them up for sale.  I bought an r-dome that was only used once for less than half of dealer cost.  I still plan to keep and use my EZ-Up canopy even though I now have an r-dome.

We also use an EZ up.  It works well and it was a fraction of the price of the Rdome.
