Subject: Extended Warranty? Worth it?

We are buying a new 2016 182G this week and they are pushing the 5 year extended warranty, $2000 and other warranty packages on us.  They seem to be more geared to the larger trailers and motorhomes.  Has anyone else passed on the warranty wished they would had purchased the extended warranty or vice versa, purchase the extended warranty and felt it was a waste of money?

If you make it past the first year with everything in tact or have your first year things warranty fixed you're usually in the clear and the rest is just normal maintenance after that.

There is an optional 2nd year Forest River warranty available that some owners choose to grab up.  It is not often that we see anyone take those dealer offered warranties.

Most repairs and fixes are easy enough if you're even remotely handy and the other stuff if it's going to fail it will certainly fail in the first year's warranty.

Thanks for your view.  I was thinking the same thing, most things will fail in the first year if they are going to fail.  I am a handy guy and plan on doing some mods.  If you know of any must do or ideas, my ears are open!
We are so excited to be R-pod owners.
Cheers,
Adam

Get the second year Forest River warranty.  Its hitch-to-bumper coverage, very cheap, and there are a few problems which may not crop up until after your second winter (e.g. decals peeling, caulking around windows/door, fibreglass delamination, and the odd appliance failure).

We just picked up our new RP 179 yesterday, and we declined the extended warranty. Up here in Canada, they were asking $3500 CDN for it. When we declined it, they lowered the price to $2500, at which point we bit our lips a bit but still ultimately declined. It seemed like an awful lot of money - more than 10% of full purchase cost. We too are reasonably handy, so we decided to take our chances. I think it was the right choice.

It kills me every time I read about yet another dealer pushing their $2000-3000 add-on warranty, most of which is just profit.  For $150 (US) you can add a whole other year of warranty right from Forest River.  I've said here many times that I never buy extended warranties, but I bought that one.

If you really want a good extended warranty (6-7 years I forget which), look up the Protective Xtraride warranty.  It covers everything and costs about $675 (US).  They cover north of the border, too.  They've been around for decades.

Yeah, what he said! I did buy the Protective XtraRide platinum plan just because I could and it really is a great plan for the money. I usually don't buy extended warranties. This was an exception.

Here is a link to the PDF that explains the coverage for the extraride plan in case you were considering it.

Where do I find info on the additional year from FR for $150?  If on their website I must have missed it.

i bought the xtraride plan as well. i didnt want to, but with all the extra protection they offer, things like paying your hotel bill if your trailer becomes unusable while your on vacation, or some of the other things,i thought i'd take a chance. 7 years of coverage with a max 50 dollar cost to repair or replace any factory unit sounded pretty good. maybe it isnt a great deal, i hope i never need it honestly.

FR doesn't extend their additional warranty up here so you guys are living large being able to get it for $150. (seems to be the average)  Our choice was what the dealer offered and it was just south of really outrageous!  Spoke with one of the Mechanics in the back when we were doing our walk through and according to him they don't get many of the Pods coming back.  Sure hope he's right because we took a pass on the Dealer offering.

Most everything significant should show up within the first year. You can always bank the amount you would have paid for an extended warranty to cover any contingencies. The dealer warranty is just an expensive insurance policy that makes a lot of money for them with low risk of actually having to pay out.

The Xtraride warranty can be purchased north and south of the border from what I've read before.

With everything they cover and for the length of the warranty I think it is a good deal - but not for the markup that dealers add for the same plan, only if you buy it direct.

I have a 2017 179 and bought the one year warranty extension from Forest River, at $150.00 it's a no-brainer.

Thanks for the info on the extended warranty.   We purchased 4 new appliances when we bought our house almost 4 years ago and bought the extended warranties.   We have used it once which paid for itself with piece of mind.  I have no idea what the actual repair would have cost but I do know that knowing we had the warranty was worth it (hence paying for itself).   When we get our R-Pod we will get the extended warranty, through Forrest River.
