We had Bear Creek Canvas make an awning for us. We gave them a piece of track (supplied by Forest River) so they could find a welt that would fit. The awning is 10' by 8' with a bag attached and came with 3 poles and 3 guy ropes & 3 heavy duty stakes. It fits perfectly and slides in the track smoothly. We inserted a 3" piece of clear tubing into the track at either end to prevent the awning from sliding out. We also fabricated a "foot" for the poles to give them more stability and a way to stake them down. The workmanship is excellent and we would recommend them highly if you want an awning. Tell them Deb and Kathy referred you. Pics attached.

We actually wish we had the awning made another 6 inches longer. It would still work fine. The bag they made for us is 6" finished and we would have preferred 6 1/2".

This is great!  I hope they would mass produce them and bring down the cost a little.  We ordered a new 179 and will take delivery at the end of August.  But we've been unable to find a good option like this.  But $300 is about $100 too much I believe.  Maybe $229?

On our old camper we had a similar awning and inside the pouch there were 3 velcro strips that held it in place.  Also, it's good to have the pouch about 4-6" wider on each end so if the rolling up isn't "neat", it will still fit in.

I'll be sure to keep your post as a good reference.  Thanks again for sharing.

Thanks for the inspiration for a custom awning.  We live in the mountains near Denver so we
had Acme Tent and Canvas make our awning.  Fits in the awning rail just like yours.
Details are:
- Attaches to 179 awning rail
- 10' wide, 8' deep
- Support poles are adjustable to a max height of just under 8'
- We have a middle grommet in case we need a third support pole.  On our test
drive we seemed fine with two.
- Fabric is a super light acyrlic awning fabric.  Fold up and fits in a small
canvas bag

My solution was to make my own. It isn't as deep as the ones above as I was trying to make it with one piece of fabric. It also had to be workable with the support system I made for it. Pictures are in my mods. This is the specific http://www.rpod-owners.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=7712&PID=75522&title=our-escapod-mods#75522 - link to a description and pictures.

My goal was to have an awning that would keep us dry going in and out if it were to rain. I would not be able to fit a table under it, but if I were inclined, I could carry a separate pop-up for that purpose.

Hi Deb and Kathy,
Came across your post while looking for an awning for our 179.  Talked to Bear Creek Canvas and ready to order, but was a bit concerned that I have not found many references in the Forum regarding this product.  A year and a half later, are you still happy with your choice?  Has it held up?  Do you keep it in its case on the side of the trailer while traveling?  Have you found you need access to a ladder while threading it through the keder rail?
Sorry to bother with all these questions, but wanted to make a good choice.  Tom (TaosPod).Big smile

Hi Tom,
We really like our awning and it is very, very well made and sturdy. Typically we do not travel with the awning attached to the R-Pod although we could. Here are some points about the awning:
- We need a ladder to start the awning in the keder rail. (we are only 5"6" at the tallest)
- Helps to have two people, one to thread it and one to pull.
- We cut a short 2" Piece of clear plastic tubing to stuff into the rail at either end of the awning. This keeps it in place and stops it from slipping in the rail when windy etc.
- We use two guy lines on the ends and one for the middle pole.

While it is more work than having one permanently attached to the camper it functions really well. You can reference us to Bear Creek  Canvas in reference to the size we ordered.

Hope this was helpful. Kathy
