Has anyone run their air conditioner on a Honda 2000i generator? I know it is supposed to not be powerful enough, but what if that is the only appliance you are trying to run? |

I have been told that we need the Yamaha 2500w generator to start the A/C. I'm almost ready to buy the Yamaha, still looking for price. Amazon has a good deal @ $1335. ------------- Dave |

Welcome. Especially out in CO the 2000 isn't going to work. An engine loses power @ 3.5% for every 1000 feet above sea level, plus 1% for every 10 degrees above 60 F. | I'm going through the same decision-making process, live in Colorado, and will be doing most camping above 6,000 ft. I just bought a Honda 2000i and a 2000i companion to run in series when needed while they were still on sale. I'm thinking about returning them and buying the comparable Yamahas that are similarly priced and get just slightly better reviews. I primarily need to be able to start and run the A/C and interior lights together on some trips but am still struggling with which generator(s) best fit our my needs. I'd like something more portable than the Honda 3000, but quiet and easy to refuel when away on a week long trip. I've read most of what I can find in this forum (which has been very informative) but would appreciate any last pearls of wisdom before returning these Hondas. Would a single Yamaha 2400 do the trick as some have suggested? Any thoughts about Yamaha vs Honda for extended boondocking? Is one better than the other if I ever need to use one to power my furnace? These things are expensive and don't want to make a $2,000 mistake - maybe we can share with Podacious... |

Two Hondas in parallel are a good choice for portability, and they will have enough power at altitude. However, you will have to add an external fuel tank kit to get a long running time. I had a Yamaha 2400 and took it on a trip out to Albuquerque, well over the 6000 feet mark. No problems for us but no matter what I could only get 8 hours out of it running the A/C overnight, and the Yamahas are much harder to upgrade for an external gas tank (no fuel pump). If you are going to run a genset overnight for heat, you would do better using it to run a small electric heater. I've done that several times.
