I'm an avid kayak angler and love to share my hobby with others, I fish mostly for largemouth bass in southeast oklahoma.  I have 3 boats a wilderness systems tarpon 120, a nucanoe that's a nice tandem boat, and my favorite a jackson kilroy.

I would love to hear about your boats, adventures, and fishing helps..

I to are and avid fisherman just without the kayak, do sometimes use a canoe though. Love trout fishing in Vermont's lakes and streams, LOVE surf fishing for Drum, blues and flounder down at Cape Hatteras NC, and REALLY LOVE ice fishing in northern Vermont.

jayandcourt. I like to fish and camp but I have to leave my boat home as I cannot pull both. I end of fishing from the bank. I would love to have a one man kayak to take as we camp at a federal camp ground close to home that has 4 lakes under 170 acres that are trolling motor only. I would like to find a kayak that I can at 65 and in good shape load and unload on the roof rack of my 08 chevy trailblazer. I am about to give up and go to a float tube with the waders built in.

I enjoy fishing out of an Old Town kayak and last year purchased a 16 ft solo Wenonah canoe. I live in Colorado and enjoy fishing lakes here and in Yellowstone and Grand Tetons.

I am a kayak angler and fish in both inshore along the Texas Gulf coast and also bass fish from time to time in central Texas area. I enjoy fishing in my Hobie Pro Angler 14. Trying now how to take my PA with me while hauling the R-Pod. More on that in a week or two.

I've ordered my rPod 178. Problem is no way to carry my two kayaks unless I buy a camper top or frame rack for my Ford F150 short bed.

A camper top will have a lot of other advantages while camping, in addition to providing a place for your boats.  And you'd have a way to haul your boats to and from your campsite.

I have an Old Town Angler that I use on the lakes in NC. I've had good luck catching large mouth bass by trolling (paddling) along dragging a Rattletrap lure.

I have a passion for fishing for steelhead and it is one of the motivating reasons I purchased the R-Pod so I can stay two or three days on the river. I have never used a kayak but have spent many hours in a float tube and/or pontoon.

I too love to kayak fish and use a Sea Eagle inflatable kayak. Very stable and only takes up 25 % of the bed of my F150 (when not camping it easily fits in trunk of my Ford Fusion)

Band Leader

We have been staying at the Cape Hatteras KOA in Rodanthe. We get a site right next to the back wall and surf fish for the month of October. This will be our fourth year in a row. The KOA has a fisherman's package 750 for the hole month. They have a great pool and hot tub. The beach is amazing.

Kayaks, canoes and wading boots! Boats go on the truck rack - we decide what to bring based on where we are going. Recently made some fly fishing lanyards so I don't have to wear a vest. For quick trips - one four piece 5 weight rod and reel in a hard case and a lanyard. Keeping it iight!

I see this thread is a few months old but....
My wife and I too have Wilderness Pongo kayaks and have tried fishing from them with limited success. The ease of launch, shallow draft and the advantage of taking the kayaks along while Podding makes it very tempting to pursue. The problem I have is my technique which I need to refine significantly to make it more enjoyable.   My biggest problem of course is trying to maintain direction in the lightest wind. Without replacing my boat with a foot powered model  is there anything I can do to make occasional fishing easier? I'm interested in discussing or seeing others boats and  set up. Any advice offered would be greatly appreciated.

I troll with a rattletrap lure from my Old Town anglerkayak on a local lake with good success. Gotta get a pickup rack so I can take the kayak with my new Rpod178.

You might try an anchor trolley and a sea anchor.  With the trolley, you can orient your yak relative to the wind any way you like: into the wind, downwind, or any point in between.  With a sea anchor, you'll still drift with the wind but slowly.  If you're in very shallow water, you could use an anchor pole instead of the sea anchor.  Good luck!

I havent tried trolling but that seems like a good idea. I will have to check into the anchor trolley, I never heard of that. Do you guys have a favorite tackle box/vest or recommended method to manage tackle and what about managing the paddle? Do you use a shorter paddle? Thanks for the advice guys.

You don't say whether your yak is a sit-in or sit on top.  Mine's a sit on top, very handy style for fishing.

On managing tackle, some folks like a soft bag (like an insulated lunch bag) they put under bungies behind the seat.  Others like something larger like a milk crate they can zip-tie rod holders on to.  I've got built-in rod holders so just keep a handful of lures in a small case.  Don't need the milk crate. You have to adjust, of course, if you're using live bait.  There are purpose-built buckets for live shrimp, minnows but that's more of a challenge in a yak, esp if it's a sit-in rather than a sit on top.

On paddles, I use a paddle leash.  Also have a paddle clip on the side of the boat.  I'd personally rather have a paddle that's too long rather than too short.  Mine's either 87" or 89", can't remember which. Best thing to remember on paddles is: light is good.  Paying extra for a lightweight paddle is money well spent IMHO.

Markie, you might want to go directly to a kayak/angling forum like Paddling.net.  There may even be one focused on your state or area.  Here in TX, for example, there's TexasKayakFisherman.com.  My guess is you'll have a much larger group of people as a kayaking resource than you'll find in an Rpod forum.

Just a thought.  Good luck!

We keep it pretty simple when we fish with our kayaks. Wife really likes her Splash Deck and rod holder. For tackle we just use a couple of small http://www.pelican.com/case_category.php - Pelican (waterproof) cases and pull some tackle from main tackle box just for the outing. We use the Pelican cases for other stuff we want to keep dry too. Lv2Q's sit-on-top is probably better for fishing and easier to board if you do flip it while landing the big one! - see You-Tube link below Star -fred

Love to camp and kayak/ fish. I'm a 63 year old female and load my kayak on the roof rack of my TV by myself. I have a smaller 55lb kayak, getting it on the roof is easy. I stand it against the side of my TV lift the end, slide it into place and strap it down.  I added a removable pole holder and have plenty of room for my fishing gear.  At the campsite I strap on my transport cart so I can pull/roll it down to the lake.
Love my R-Pod

You go girl!! When the yaks get too heavy for us to throw on top of the TV, we'll look at getting something like http://www.thule.com/en-us/us/products/carriers-and-racks/water-sport-carriers/kayak-and-canoe-carriers/thule-hullavator-897xt-_-18974 - The Hullavator

I have been a kayak angler since 2000 both fresh and salt  water and had a few Nantucket Sled rides from 40 plus inch stripers. Just purchased a 179 R-pod yesterday and my  thoughts on taking the kayak is leaning towards one of the new inflatable two persons kayaks endorsed by Bill Dance for convenience .Not sure what a camper topper is?   Tight linesSmile

Grew up down in Hyannis, used to fish for Stripers and blues all the time. Brings back a lot of memories.  Used to fish along the canal with my grandfather!

I have two yaks to transport. Which type of roof top rack do you guys use for your yaks? The "J" type which holds the yak in a near vertical position or the type which holds the yak flat with the bottom down? Any thoughts on which one has the least effect on gas mileage?

That is very interesting info. I guess the yaks must divert the air flow some before it hits the pod.

I see in your pic  that you have a skirt over your cockpit. I assume that this is to keep out rain & keep the yak from acting like a parachute.

The cockpit covers are great for keeping the boats clean when dragged up on shore or hanging in garage and turn them into great car top carriers when on TV roof. We stuff them with all kinds of gear.
