This last weekend I was checking the air pressure in my tires and it occurred to me that my spare tire is brand new and going to 'waste'. Is there any reason why I shouldn't rotate the spare in for use?  Has anyone else bothered to do this?

Thanks,
Rob

No problem if the wheels were all the same. The spare is on a white painted steel wheel. Not a good match to the other two. You could rotate the tires onto the primary wheels, but that would be lots of trouble and expose the tires/rims to potential damage.

Probably most of the time trailer tires are going to need replacing because of age more quickly than due to wear, so, rotate or not, you will probably need to replace all 3 at the same time anyway.  Less work not to rotate.  If the spare is covered, it might be okay to let the spare go through 2 sets of ground tires, but it would be safer and still cheap insurance to do all 3 at once.

Do they still say not to rotate radial tires from side to side? I get my tow vehicle tires rotated every oil change so I can't say I've ever payed much attention to the process.

+1.  My pod had over 15,000 miles after 5 years but there was still plenty of tread left.  I would have replaced them next fall at the 6 year mark.

Good call Charlie!  I wasn't thinking about the rims.  Based on your reply and the reply of the others I'll leave the spare where it is.

Thanks!

Hi everyone. I know this is an older thread, but I have a quick question about the spare. We just bought a used 182 that didn't come with a spare. So, I need to pick one up. What is the wheel size and bolt pattern for the R Pod?

Also, I intend to use the hitch mount for our bike rack. Will the spare fit in one of the exterior storage compartments?

Thanks,
Grant

On the 181, the spare CAME in the street side compartment.
