one thing i haven't seen or heard is anyone pulling with a good old (i guess new!!) basic box van.  it seems this would be the ultimate (at least for me) camping/traveling vehicle.  all enclosed for heat and air for asher (my golden retriever), alot of available storage, ability to utilize well when base camping, could fix it up to ones liking, etc.  just curious if anyone has towed with one, any experiences, pros/cons, etc.  i have always wanted one, but always went with the p/u.  any maybe room for the hog!!  hogone

I don't think box vans are that popular for a personal vehicle they are more used as a company vehicle. I think they would be good for blocking the wind, a small camper would not be affected by the wind as much. I agree I don't remember anyone towing a r-pod with a box van. With gas prices being as high as they have been people are more interested in vehicles that get good gas mileage.

i would like to put aside gas mileage on this discussion; looking at more at the ultimate tv and usefulness.  p/u's likely get simular gas mileage anyway.  basically looking at full versatility.  putting a rack on top for canoe and kayak, etc. someday i'm hitting the road with my pod with no destination.   i'm really interested in this discussion.  hogone

We thought about it, but finding one with a heavy duty tow package etc is difficult. We use a large SUV, and it works for us. We have friends on the Airstream side who tow their 31 foot Sovereign with a Airstream B van. Works good for their lifestyle. They base the tube, and then short trip and overnight the area in the Bvan..

I just saw someone pulling a tandem axle TT with a box van today. Looked like a 3/4 ton dodge. Looked stable and they were cursing at 65 mph.

Yes, I think a box van, Road Trek or Airstream B van would all make great TVs. The ultimate, of course, would be to hook your pod up to the back of one of these Allegro 36ers!  Instead of a toad, it would be called a mole (mother-in-law-extra)! Would that count as one vehicle in a campsite? Big smile

nice!!!!  if one were to build to their liking, what axle ratio would be best; 3.73 or 4.10 (non-slip or limited)?  pretty green here on axle ratios!!  just looking at ford website at the recreational 350.  i am only assuming probably rare on a dealer lot.  obviously not doing this today, but i get excited for future.  hogone

We used to tow a 3 horse trailer with a Dodge van years ago, which figures out at around 10,000 lbs. Did a good job.  There are times, however , when 4 wheel drive is important.  I haven't seen a van conversion for years.  For example , after a rain, I need the 4WD to get up the hill to the barn where I keep the trailer.  And I have encountered snow in the mountains in July.  One 4th of July we woke up to 4" of snow on the camper in central Idaho.

excellent point on the 4 wheel drive aspect.  not sure if that would be a make or break deal with me though, but something to think about.  hogone
