Howdy, All .. Well, we're just about to pull the trigger on a 179. This brings up thoughts on weight distributing hitches and brake controllers. I've never used a brake controller but, by golly, I knew right where to go for help! Is there much of a trick to adjusting these things? I think I've read where the Prodigy P3 is used by several of you. An article I read on adjusting said basically to drive around 10mph, touch the brake lightly (enough to light up the brake lights) and then adjust the gain enough to where the trailer brakes just start to grab. Sounds logical to me but then I don't know Jack. How does it sound to you guys? Sounds about right. I read that you don't want them grabbing & dragging the TV to a stop, but don't want the trailer pushing the TV either. When we brought our 178 home empty I had our P3 set to 6.5. Loaded I adjusted it to 7.2 YMMV.
The one thing that I've found with ours that bothers me is that after not towing for a few days, I have to reset the brake setting back to 7.2. It will reset itself to full on boost.  ------------- Darryl, Julie & Lindsey Cooper & Libby- Devoted Canines 2014 RP178 2006 Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon |

I have a P2, and a bouncy road will also setoff the controller to full boost, otherwise it is a very good unit and very easy to program. I have never used any of the pre-programed boost settings.
Mine locked the brakes at 5.4, so I set to 5.2 and no lockup. See this youtube video starting at 2:45 (setting the power output). May be similar to the P3..... |
