http://stateparks.mt.gov/lewis-and-clark-caverns/ - Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park was another great stop on our trip and probably the biggest surprise. Why? Because it was much more beautiful and interesting and adventurous than we expected. From the spacious campsite near the Madison River, to the great hikes around and into the surrounding hills, to a side trip to the Headwaters Heritage Museum in Three Forks, where we saw an award winning display of 409 styles of barbed wire; don't miss this place! The guided spelunking trip (they call it a "cavern tour") is, uhhh, memorable! Just make sure you don't mind very dark, narrow, steep, bat flying spaces! We loved it and wished we had more than two nights. Wow! you took your Pod all the way there from NJ towing with a 4 Runner?
Could you give some insights on your travel experience? Places stayed on the way, length of trip, etc. I also noticed bikes on the rear. How did you take those? My wife is very hesitant on towing more than 3-4 hours from home :( |

Hi johnmaci, Yep! We had a fabulous trip and no issues with TV or Pod. Others have gone further and longer, but ours was 8,216 miles in 26 days. We have no regrets and saw spectacular sights and met a lot of great folks. Next time, we would slow it down a bit. Had some loooong driving days of 10-15 hours. We dry camped most of the trip, only used the AC once (more often heat), defrosted fridge once, filled propane once (Kalaloch), always traveled with (nearly) emptied grey-fresh-black tanks, averaged about 11 mpg @ 60-62 mph and took 3000+ photos! Our stops: Home Kickapoo State Park, Illinois Windmill State Recreation Area, Nebraska Rockport State Park, Utah Donner Memorial State Park, California Pfeiffer Big Sur State, California Jedediah Smith Redwood State Park, California Beverly Beach State Park, Oregon Cougar Rock Campground, Washington Kalaloch Campground, Washington Potholes State Park, Washington Lewis and Clark Caverns Campground, Montana Custer State Park, South Dakota Snake Creek State Park, South Dakota Lake Anita State Park, Iowa Summit Lake State Park, Indiana Home You can click the link in my signature to see the mods made before the trip including the bike rack. First I have to say your Mods are great. The interior really looks warm and inviting, plus the extra 12v outlets always help...
10-15 hour days????? OMG! she would hang me! So, we are first time RV'rs, and just got our 2015 model two months ago mostly to attend star parties while boondocking/dry camping. We used it twice, and have winterized it early to make sure a sudden freeze doesn't catch us off guard. Besides, most star parties are over for the year except for the winter star party in the Fl Keys. We pondered whether or not to make that long a drive, and talked ourselves out of it (for better or worse). I do have a couple more questions if you don't mind: 1) I see in the pictures you have a generator. How do you use/store it/minimize the fumes? How do you store/transport gas? 2) How do you keep your food in the fridge from spoiling while travelling? Does your fridge run on DC? (mine is only propane and AC). The bike rack adapter is a great idea. I may have to look into something like that. Thanks for sharing...... John

Thanks for the compliments John. Mods and trip planning are a lot of the fun of owning a RV. At least for me. We are new RV owners also. Bought ours in the fall of 2014. Did a couple or three 300 mile shakedown trips and then took off cross country. Really not much different between 300 and 3000 miles 'cept time and more fun stops.  There is sooo much to see and experience when crossing country we never really felt bored; especially when we left the highway for a closer look at America. http://www.roadsideamerica.com - Roadside America is a great website and App. There was L.J. Maasdam's Wheel Art in Lynnville, Iowa.  There was great fun at Roberts Prairie Dog Town in Badlands National Park, South Dakota  Lunch at River’s Edge Restaurant in La Push, Washington offered some memorable views  The museaum at Three Forks, Montana was interesting. A bit creepy, but interesting!  Having lived up the road from Miami for 25 years, how odd it was to run into the Spruce Goose and hundreds of other aircraft at the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum in McMinnville, Oregon!  Just remember: It's not just the destination; it's the journey too! There are soooo many places *off* the highway that are worth absorbing. OK, the genny. On this trip, we used it less that three hours total over 26 days. We carry it in the back of our TV and notice no fumes whatsoever. Still running on same tank of gas I filled this past June, so I really can't comment on storing extra gas, although I do have a virgin 2 gallon container. Fridge is super simple for us. We just run it off propane 24/7 unless we're on shore power which is rare. We keep an analog thermometer in it and have had no problem in either freezer or fridge. We must just be lucky. BTW, most of what I have learned about this RV thing has been right here. Lots of folks with a lot more experience than me have inspired and encouraged me. It's been great fun...as it should be.
