This is just something that's really bugging me since moving to RV's from yachts/boats.

What's up with this roof top lap sealant stuff?

I've sailed many boats through seas bigger than than the boat and I never seen the kind of goop I've seen on the top of my R-Pod. Why? I put on an Utra-Breeze vent not too long ago and had to cut away about 2 inches of goop (lap sealant) to do it. Doesn't make any sense.

My roof is ugly with cement and I don't understand why when my boat which took on salt water waves wasn't. Can someone please explain?

It's not a big deal, but I just don't understand.

Thanks!

fred

Well, you boat didn't have 70 MPH winds driving the water into every crack and crevice either. At least I hope not.

Good point! Still it does seem like a lot of goop. Thanks.

I think this is just a bit of Forest River going overboard to avoid leaks. A few dollars in sealant can save an expensive warranty leak during the warranty period.

VW also does this inside the doors of some of their vehicle with wax so water cannot rust them from the inside, even thought he steel is double galvanized already. They just don't ever want any rust during the 10 year warranty.
