I bought a HRE 177 Rpod. As part of the HRE package it came with 15 inch off road tires.



I know the tires will not power me out of the mud, but are they of any use other than looks? Better or worse fuel mileage?

Opinions?

They are probably more for aesthetics than anything, but I suspect they might be marginally beneficial in mud or sand.  If they do help at all you will probably need to be in 4WD and have good tires on your TV in any situation where they might be advantageous.  I really don't know about gas mileage, but I don't think I'd swap them out for that reason. If they add anything to the ground clearance of the pod, that is probably where they'd help the most.

I agree they are mostly for looks.  I could see them possibly helping to prevent it from sliding if you were on a sideways incline in the mud or snow.  Or maybe providing better braking in the mud or snow, but since the pod doesn't provide any motive traction there's little point.

I think it is more for ground clearance & traction on unpaved surfaces. Plus they look more suited to the off road look that the HRE provides. I would rather have them....

The down side is... If you use a bal leveler it's a tight fit so bring a mallet. When the tread wears a little it won't be needed.

I always thought this type of tread would make punctures from glass/nails less likely....

Those thick knobby tires saved my bacon on the road (more of a trail) to Gypsy Lake in the Big Belts of MT last year.  The road passes over a rock formation that fractures into sharp pyramid-shaped stones.  My friend in a Lance with regular, but high quality radials punctured twice, once in and once out.  My pod just sailed over them without a problem.  Regardless, we won't be back to Gypsy Lake again.
