When we ordered our 178 in September, one of my conditions of sale was to swap the basic 3-speed Fantastic fan in the new pod with the 3- speed reversible, thermostatically controlled Fantastic fan I had installed in my old 2010 173 that I was trading in.  When I picked up the 178 in November, the first thing I did was install a Fantastic vent cover.  I have had these covers on every RV I have owned during the last 20 years or so, and can now install one in 10-15 minutes.  The only drawback is that the black cover greatly decreases the amount of natural light in the bathroom.

Like jj, I strongly encourage installing a Fantastic cover on any R-Pod.  Without it, I would worry if I wanted to leave the standard fan cover while we are away from the pod.

I'm showing my ignorance here, but what does the vent cover do?

I may be wrong but as far as I know with that cover you can leave your fan lid open when it rains.

we run the bathroom fan while cooking and we open the bathroom fan lid when we use our space heater or propane heater. (condensation)

That is a good feature unless you want the lid to remain open for ventilation.  The Fantastic vent cover keeps the rain (and dirt) out yet allows the fan to run or a natural flow of air without the fan.  The black cover does cut down on the amount of light, which can be either a blessing or a problem.

Mark, the rain sensor on your fan is a top of the line feature.  Too bad FR does not have that fan as an option.

I have looked at many a camper in my time, very few have had a FF period, let alone the top end one. I kept all my stock "guts and parts" when I upgraded, if we sell, the pod will have the base fan back in it when it goes up for sale. We already know what our next camper will be, and I will specify the base FF fan in it, then swap out the upgrade parts again.

I installed my upgraded Fantastic Fan in an Aerolite Zoom TT, had the dealer swap it to my 2010 R-Pod 173 and eventually to my 2014 178.  You are right, most TTs don't have Fantastic fans although the 2 Class A motor homes I have owned did come with one.  The Class B and Class C models came with standard fans.  The first Class C I owned did not have even have a fan or A/C, but that was over 30 years ago.

I'm new to trailers so perhaps I'm missing something obvious, but aren't all R-Pod fans located in the wet bath? What's the concern about the rain for, then? Damage to the fan itself?

It won't hurt anything in the wet bath, but many don't want to discover that the bathroom is soaked from a midnight shower when they duck in at 3 am.

Good point. I'm still getting used to this "comfort as a priority" idea :) I'm converting from long hikes to the thunderbox/shack at best.

Definitely a step up from a cat hole or outhouse on the AT or PCT!

Love the Ultra Breeze cover on our 178. It was a bit of a tight fit with antenna, but a little anti-chafing material and silicon and no problem for last 10K plus miles.
