My kids and I just watched John Carter last night. Interesting back-story on that movie with the 100 year history before it was completed, almost beating Snow White as the first animated feature-length film in 1937, and how so many modern sci-fi movies borrowed every main element from the book.

The recent movie was pretty bad. The books are much, much better. There are a lot of great characters. I got on a Edgar Rice Burroughs kick -- actually a Tarzan kick several years ago. After reading most of the Tarzan books I moved on to Barsoom and then a lot of the other books. Time to go back through them.
It was really too bad about the Disney movie. I don't know what they were thinking. They ruined the idea of a John Carter movie franchise for at least a generation and there is plenty of great material there. I can't tell objectively, other than by the reviews and response the movie got, but maybe the movie was okay if you'd never heard of ERB. I don't think so though.

"Princess of Mars" was on TV yesterday--Pretty poorly done. I read and collected most of the Burroughs paperbacks in my youth. I passed them on to my son, and he says Burroughs was one of the early authors that inspired him to follow his chosen life's work as a writer. Proud as a parent and retired teacher to say he is now a published author, and not vanity press either! Lance Weller "Wilderness"
