Anything short of that picture and you're still good to go really. Mine is going on it's 4th year next year and looks a million times better than the bad one in this pic!

Thanks! What if it looks halfway between the two, but is pink because I started to winterize it and didn't realize that you're not supposed to put antifreeze in the hot water heater?  ------------- Matt |

RV Antifreeze in the water heater or on the anode is fine. No harm done. The only reason you're not supposed to put antifreeze in the water heater is because it takes a large amount of the stuff to fill it, which costs money. Because its easy to bypass and drain the water heater, and the process forces an annual inspection on the anode, its recommended to drain. ------------- Craig :: 2009 RP171 towed by a 2017 F150 |

Halfway is good. As long as it's not as bad as the worst of the two in the pic you're golden. Mine wasn't nearly worn as badly as the one in the picture but I bought a new one and put it in, and I'm keeping the old one as my spare. I guess I figure I might drain the hot water heater sometime and find the anode is totally wasted and want to use the spare to get by for a until it's convenient to pick up another one. Thanks for all your tips. This is my first time winterizing. Do people usually leave the anode out over the winter? This would let the tank to dry out and not leave a little water in the bottom to get funky...? What is recommended? ------------- Matt |

I stick mine back in the hole so I don't lose it over the winter. Cause if it goes somewhere other than in that compartment I'd end up having to buy a new one each season. I just don't screw it in. So it's open to dry out completely.
