I have had a few telecons this week with Couch's in Ohio about ordering a new 178.  I did learn that FR has a contract with Dometic for all the R-Pod roof A/C units.  I want only a Coleman, but that can not be ordered.  The option is to order the pod without an air conditioner.  Unfortunately, the sales rep could not tell me if it could be pre-wired for an A/C.  Techntrek, I believe you were wondering about this in an earlier post.

He also confirmed my thoughts about pod prices in Florida, including used ones, are considerably higher than in the northern and Midwest states.

I called Giant Recreation in Melbourne, FL (about 45 miles south of me) and asked if they had a 178 that my wife and I could look at.  I was told that R-Pods down here are so costly for them to buy that they no longer sell them.  The bad is that I can not buy a new one in my area, the good is that the resale value is relatively high on used pods.  Looks like there might be a 2010 173 on the market in the next month or two.

I think there is a dealer in Jacksonville that carries the Pod.  I can't think of the name right now.

LazyDays in Tampa usually has three or four 'Pods on the lot at any given time.

If They are THAT much more expensive in FLA, go to Couch's and get one, it seems to me for the price of the gas it would be worth it. Call Forest River and ask about the wiring.Or get one with Dometic, swap it out, have a spare or sell the brand new factory a/c to someone who needs one..

I recently got a quote for a 178 and requested it not include the factory A/C.  I also asked for a quote to install the Polar Cub at the dealer.  They said no problem to both.

I would be very surprised if the pods didn't come prewired from the factory, I haven't heard of any other campers that aren't but I'm sure there are exceptions.

I have talked to both Lazy Days (Seffner, FL) and the dealer in Jacksonville, FL.  They are both about $3000 higher than some of the dealers up north.  For that kind of money, I am willing to make a 942 mile trip north.  To have it transported to my home would be a little over $1300.  It is still worthwhile to pick it up.

But, I will have to sell my present pod before I order another one.

If they are pre-wired, that is the way I would go.  The Coleman units are much quieter than the Dometics.  I noticed that Camping World is having a big sale on the Polar Cubs right now.  Pre-wired, I categorize the installation as DIY.  I have done it before.

Just a quick search produced at least one place that is selling the Polar Cub for about $200 cheaper than CW's sale price.  I don't know how shipping works into either price.

The big sale at CW apparently is over.  The Polar Cub was around $660, now it is $799, which is their normal "sale" price.  Shipping is $122.00.
