Here's the scoop.
After 1/2 hour incandesent temp. of lens was 66 degrees C, the bulb temp was 76 degrees C.
After 1 hour LED temp. of lens was 27 degrees C, the bulb temp. was the same at 27 degrees C.

I took my 48 LED Panel, hanging free from fixture (see LED meltdown topic) and used my Ryobi spot temp gun to read backside and LED sides of the panel.  Not sure how accurate my $30 tool is but here's what I got:

Elapsed time.       Backside.       LED side

5 min.                    177 F.            189 F.
15 min.                  187 F.            199 F.

FYI.  Bill

No wonder you had a meltdown, your LED lights are hotter than the incandesent lights.
My LEDs after 1 hour are 80F, incandesent after1/2 hour lens is 150F LED bulb is 168F

So   ...all LED panels are not created equal ? We have 36 array LED slabs in all of our fixtures. Have never put a thermometer to them but often reach up when they've been on for a while and have never gotten a overly hot feeling ??

Sounds like they are being over-driven to produce their output.  Typical of cheaper LED arrays - design them to put more amps through them than they should which makes them brighter.  However, that kills them faster mostly because they run hotter.
