Here is our current-soon-to-be-back-up TV. 2008 Santa Fe. Hubs just bought a 1992, GMC conversion van with all the whistles and bells to tow with. He is in the process of getting it "road-worthy" to his standards. I must admit, it will be nice to travel in. It's only had two owners and was garaged for most of the time. Being in it is like going back in time!I'll post pics of the new-old TV when we take it out for the first time over 4th of July.

Keith-n-Dar, I must admit that your picture while very awesome, is a little scary. Ferry rides have always bothered me a little and I would be very nervous to put my Pod on one. I know, I know, people do it everyday, but still... it's my POD!!!

First you need to go into "full edit mode".  Either click the Post Reply button under the last post, or look for the little arrow pointing up-right just above the text box in the Quick Reply area.

Once you are there look for the little picture of the tree and click on that.  You can then upload a picture which will be visible in your post.

New to me 09 171 and my 07 Wrangler JKU.

So far I have put a Mopar 7 pin harness, Prodigy P2 brake controller in the Jeep. Taken it on 2 trips, fuel economy goes down by about a litre per 100km with the trailer.

How well does that Traverse pull the pod, I am not sure but I thought the traverse was rated at 3500 lbs for towing. looks like a nice set up.

Hello dsmiths,

We bought the 2012 Traverse with the towing package as we knew that we going to enter the travel trailer world.  It is rated at 5200 lbs.

Our first 1 hour camping trip will be in 2 weeks time but it towed like a dream when I test drove the setup.  Didn't know the R-Pod was there, until I looked in the rearview mirror.  I will let you know how it works out on terrain that is less flat.

This is the day we picked up our 2013 RP 182G . Someone purchased it a few months ago , camped in it twice , and then, after a few months , took it to another dealership and traded it in on a huge fifth-wheel. We rolled up before the dealer sales staff had even had a chance to look it over. It still had the plastic wrapper on the glass rotisserie in the oven along with the Styrofoam packing . The stickers were still on the freezer . The 181G would have been ideal for us ( like the idea of a full time bed ) but this  one was such a bargain for a practically mint trailer , we had to snatch it up . It came with the R Dome as well .
For the last year , we had camped in a 2006 Thor Wave RB22 , a really nice trailer inside and very comfortable. The only drawback was it towed like a re-entry parachute ! Heading to the Texas Gulf coast with a headwind would result in the neighbourhood of 5 - 5-1/2 mpg , rotten fuel "economy" for lack of a better term !
TV is a 2012 F-150 crew-cab , 4X4 , powered by the 3.5L twin turbo Eco-Boost . In a test tow , I got about 13mpg with the Pod , and that included several starts from a dead stop .Maybe not the greatest economy , but a BIG improvement . We can afford to pull this one out west to photograph wildlife , we could not do this with the Thor .
For several years , we pulled a homebuilt teardrop behind my '04 F-150 . Two summers ago we made a 6,500 mile trek through the Grand Canyon , Monument Valley , Yellowstone , up to Glacier ,and back home to Austin , a great trip .On that trip , the little lady decided she would like a set of private facilities , and even though we were comfortable with the temps in the mountains , I will confess to symptoms of a/c withdrawal a few times in Arizona and Monument Valley .
I think with our new R Pod we have found the sweet spot , a rig that tows like a dream , and provides many of the comforts of home while on the road !

Hello everyone - my name is Terry and I live in the Seattle area. I just returned from a drive over to Blue Dog RV in Post Falls, Idaho to pick up my 2014 model 178. It's a dream come true, especially when towing it. I barely knew it was there until I hit the mountain (Snoqualmie Pass) pass coming back. However, I set the cruise to 60 and it didn't budge and inch.

I had religiously studies all the smaller trailers under 20 ft and came to the conclusion that it would be hard to beat the benefits of an R-Pod. I called Poulsbo RV here in the Seattle area and they wanted $22,500 - but would come down to $21,500 just because they liked me. I hated the archaic salesman pressure like they used in the old day - Poulsbo still teaches that I guess. I called Blue Dog and they quoted me $14, 450 bucks - loaded. Lydia was a VERY nice lady to deal with at Blue Dog. They greeted me when I walked in the door - fetched me a Pepsi and another concierge person personally golf-carted me to my R-Pod for a quick look see. Buying it was totally hassel-free, like all sales should be.

I look forward to my first trip this coming week to the WA State Trapshooting Championships in Little Rock, WA. My thanks to all you forum members for your informative posts - mine is a perfect example where a buying decision was made because of the posts you all have made here. I named mine "Podcicle" - cause it makes the mouth water Big smile

Just getting around to posting on the forum.  We've had our pod since late May and have take a couple of trips.  The adventures and lessons are being logged on our web site, http://www.rpawd.com - rpawd.com .

Here's a pic of our tow vehicle, a 2008 Saturn Vue XR.  Has done nicely over multiple high mountain passes in Colorado, but I try not to push it too much.  Heading east over I-70 was the toughest - down to about 25-30mph in 2nd gear (manual overdrive).  Most other passes I'd be able to do about 40mph in 3rd or 4th.

Ridgeline is ending production in 2014, according to industry sources and will take a 2 year hiatus before being reintroduced.  I hope that 2014 won't be the end.  Can't figure out why sales were so bad, because those who have them really like them.

Because Hondas and Toyotas are running to 250-350 thousand miles, there's no need to buy a new one?  After 5 years our Prius is still operating exactly as it was 108k miles ago - still has most of the original brakes too since so much braking is done via regen.  No reason for a new one, and I'd like to buy another used one for my own commuting (wife has our current one most of the time).  IMO American cars all have built-in obsolescence...

Hey bsea, nice boats! You BC'ers sure live in paddling heaven. I've had boats since 1990, but only tupperware ones--currently a 14.5 Carolina and an older 16' Aquaterra. Unfortunately they're both hung in the garage til my rotator cuff surgery. I've only done Puget Sound, Grays Harbor and a couple week long boat packs on Lake Ozette out here on the Olympic Peninsula.  Dip a paddle for me, will ya?

Also, looking at the tires on your HRE. They don't look like any ST tires I've ever seen. They look like LT's, are they, and what brand?

The tires are LT 235/75/R15 and were on the pod when we bought it new in Dec. It says "Mudstar", but we don't know what company makes them.

Hope you can get back to kayaking soon!

I guess I don't understand the need for traction lugs on trailer tires. I would think they would wear faster on pavement and not give any extra on dirt.

WARNING- TOTALLY USELESS POST.

Some would believe that it would give you more traction with braking on dirt or muddy roads and may also keep the trailer from sliding. I really have no idea what I'm talking about but they sure look kick a$$. And if they do wear out fast, I'll probably look for another pair just like them. Also, if u put the two trailers next to each other, one with mud tires and one without. I'm pretty sure most would say that mine could beat up the one without.
Cheers
Probably could be put in a new thread.

I had thought that I had read somewhere that the HRE's came w/15"LT tires. Thanks to our Canadian contingent for affirming that. Regular older Pods like mine come with 14" ST's. There is a pretty widespread argument on many RV sites about replacing ST's with LT's on travel trailers. It seems that many if not most ST's are now produced in China, and lots of people have been concerned with quality problems that have shown up with these ST tires.

I'm going to replace my Pod tires next year before our huge Pod trip, and have been deliberating on which way to go. I'm sure interested in hearing from our BC buddies, and any other HRE owners about how their LT's are wearing and towing. I've read that Maxxis ST's are one of the few brands that maintain a good rep. Therefore, right now Maxxis or LT'S are what I'm considering. Advice?

There are several benefits to the LT tires:

1) They look totally kick a$$.

2) People stop and stare at those kick a$$ tires.

3) Sometimes they tell me and my wife, Brenda, that our trailer is cute but those tires are kick a$$.

4) My brother thought the tires were kick a$$ when he saw them.

5) As did my sister, "KICK A$$!" she said.

6) When my grandson is old enough to talk, I bet he will say they are kick a$$ too.

Any other benefit, real, or imagined, is just icing on the cake.

I think those tires look great, but I am curious about one thing.  Do they tend to throw more mud on the sides of the pod?  I was wondering if mud flaps might be a good idea.

Thumbs Up  Fun thread guys!

Someone asked about the tires throwing mud up the side of the Pod. They don't. We just drove 15 km of gravel road to get to Birkenhead Lake this weekend and there was no mud on the Pod. We get a little on the front from my truck which we will have to remedy with a better set of mud flaps.

This is our first trailer, and I can't speak for my wife, but I am quite enjoying it. We do a lot of outdoor stuff, kayaking, backpacking, cycling, etc., which up until now has meant many, many nights in tents. The Pod is a great way to extend our season and include the grandkids in the adventures. One of my best adventures was my 3 year old grandson and I spending a weekend in a local RV park where he got to fish, have a camp fire and just hang out with me.

I have to say though, I will not be giving up the tent anytime soon. There is something about being miles away from the nearest road, with nothing but a beach and the Pacific between you and Japan, and the stars your only company that I will never tire of . . . no matter how kick a$$ those tires are! Tongue

It's about 90 miles maybe from the 'ville.  Probably doesn't take us much more than an hour fourty or so to get there.  Always feels like a short drive!

Hello,

I am Dave and I too just bought a 171 from Blue Dog in PF! I pick it up Monday. I had the same experience with Poulsbo RV in Mt Vernon, didn't want to deal. I then made a tentative offer on one in Boise. I stopped in PF on the way home (I live in Miisoula) and made a very easy deal with Mitch, no pressure and wrote them a check. I think you got a better deal than I did! That's the way it goes I guess. I am going to stay in the PF/Spokane area a couple of nights so if I have any issues, I can get them resolved right away.

Enjoy the podcicle and I will be looking for posts of your adventures!

Dave

I've noticed that a lot of American campers have a flag up when camping. Is there a reason for this or is it just a personal thing? I know when I'm camping I pretty much know which country I'm from! Smile

I flew a flag in front of my house for some years following 911. A few months ago it shredded and I haven't replaced it. I never did fly one camping, but it seemed the least I could do when 911 was so raw. I think for many people it is an expression of patriotism. For those who choose not to it is not the opposite, but just means they choose not to. We all have our ways.

I'm with Keith.  Your "pod" is your home away from home.  As a family who had a son in the military overseas, we choose to fly a flag both at our permanent and "away" home.  It was not to tell other campers where we were, but more for the same reason we did at home, to show support for our son and his fellow soldiers.

We we will continue to do so as long as we have soldiers in harm's way.

Best,

Jim

It's R's! Our Pod is in R driveway. 2014 178.

Overall, very happy with fit 'n finish and dealer prep/orientation. Been spending the last few hours coming up with a hit list. There is always a hit list. So far, the only issue I am concerned about is Dometic refrigerator door fit. It seems to be off a bit with a small gap in top left seal. I think it requires a bit too much "push" to get it to latch and after reading the docs, don't think it should require as much. Seems like the right side top hinge is a bit out of adjustment causing the door to bind a bit when closing. Any ideas?

Anyway, I will have tons more questions, but tow home (about 2 hours) was without incident and for better or worse...we are officially podders.

TV is 2007 4Runner Limited V6 (50K miles) w/factory towing package. Pod dealer installed Trunion Style WD & friction sway bars and brake control.

Should have gotten longer water hose...

That is one good looking pod!!  Have you planned your first outing yet?  I would not worry about the length of your hose.  I have found that it is better to carry two shorter hoses rather than one long one.  Usually a short hose is long enough and easier to handle, and, if need be, just connect the second hose to it.  I do the same with my coax cable.  I carry one rather short one, plus a longer one and a connector.  Normally the shorter one is enough.

I still have another 3 weeks before my new 178 is delivered to my dealer.  I noticed that they already have my 2010 173 advertised although they won't have it until my new one arrives.

On month 5 with our 2013 RP177. Your fridge is under warantee. We had a broken shelf in ours. Through the dealer, Dometic sent a new shelf with no questions asked. We had to buy an additional sewer hose with a coupler along with another f/w hose and a heavy duty electrical extension cord as many campsite are not always close to the connections. A couple other items you might want to grab are a clear 45 degree angle sewer coupler and electrical adapters male and female. You never know what you are going to encounter as you travel. We also got an additional sewer hose storage tube (longer) and mounted it behind the one one that came with the pod. Most of these items are available at Walmart and are rather inexpensive.

2014 RP177.... towed with A 2009 Toyota Tacoma.   This is my first travel trailer and I thought I would feel the weight on the back when towing..... I was pleasantly surprised that I don't feel the trailer at all when towing.   I bought an expensive weight distribution hitch because I was scared of towing in a small truck, but once I attached the trailer I realized I didn't need it.   I haven't towed on the highway yet, so I am not sure if I need a sway bar or not..... the dealer mechanic said I probably would not need one, but there is no way to really know till I get out on the highway.

Thanks Bob! We are planning all kinds of outings. Planning is part of the fun. Ricketts Glen State Park or Hawk Mountain both look great and are close by. Hoping our (other) schedule doesn't keep us from getting out before winterization. That time is rapidly approaching.

In the meantime...we're shopping!

First thing I noticed was: It's considerably less expensive outfitting a small TT than it is a small yacht!! That 25 ft. length of drinking water hose for $10 would have been $50 at West Marine!.This morning's Amazon shopping list:

Holmes HFH436WGL-UM Heater Fan with Bathroom Safe Plug
Curt 28276 Jack Caster Assembly
Curt 28272 Jack Foot
Camco 57363 Leveling Scissor Jack Socket

Also, firing up Google Sketchup again to start modeling some modifications we think might be nice. Borrowing from futon frame design, I don't see a big reason why the aft queen could not be made into a nice convertible with end table over water heater/furnace locker and another aft of head w/storage access below. Comfortable folding mattresses are a bit of a challenge. For those with a 172 or just like messing with Sketchup, there is a beautiful model @  http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=33359a70c7945ba9fbaf67cf0952613f - http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=33359a70c7945ba9fbaf67cf0952613f

Back to shopping...

GS, we just brought our new 178 home from dealer on the back of our 2007 4Runner Limited. We opted for the WD Hitch and friction sway bar. Home tow was about 2 hours - PA turnpike, heavy urban traffic and small country roads.

I definitely knew the pod was back there. Not because of any strain of the vehicle, but because it was a bit "bumpier" than the normally smooth ride of the 4Runner. In traffic @ slow speeds, the trailer breaks are noticeable. I might need to adjust those a bit. All the WD hitch hardware might be overkill, but I don't think it will hurt. Again, the 4Runner showed no signs of strain with the load. I played a little with Overdrive vs. 4th on relatively flat terrain and, frankly, couldn't tell a difference.

We are close to a couple of state parks w/dump stations and no highways in between so if I need to make a short run, I'll probably use my regular 2" receiver. I might carry it with me if I decide not to leave the WD gear on back of TV full time.

Fred, check the diameter of your jack shaft before you order your caster assembly.  I have found that they come in 2 different sizes.  The same is probably true for the foot assembly.  Didn't your pod come with the foot assembly?

Thanks Bob. The jack on my frame is a Ram - RAM155157. I just measured the inner tube O.D. @ 2". Not a lot of specs on the caster or foot I ordered, but both say they fit 2" tubes.

No, my pod didn't come with a foot, but you prompted me to go look and I did find an extra 30 amp to 15 amp adapter in the trunk. Thanks for asking, though, and all your advice!

Here is a pic of our set up, when we were at White Sands last month.

We love this set up. The Avalanche has such a short bed, it is a little tight carrying the motorcycle in the back. Eventually, we will get another TV. Right now we are happy podders.
