Hurricane Sandy is on the way and we have plans to camp at the Delaware Seashore State Park for the weekend.  I'm pretty sure we will be fine for Friday and Saturday, maybe even Sunday.  Monday is the wildcard.  I'm not one to run from rain but this could be a different story.  We can go to the in-laws and park in front of their house but they have a lot of old trees and branches often fall during storms. I think I may check a local hotel to see if their garage has enough clearance that we can park there until the storm passes.

Has anyone stuck it out during a tropical storm/hurricane?  What do you think... stick it out or head home a day early? Any thoughts are appreciated.

I wouldn't ride out a hurricane in a pod.  Like your in-laws we have several old oaks over our driveway and where I usually store the pod which are notorious for dropping dead branches.  Twice now with the threat of a hurricane I've moved our pod down to an open field to get it away from trees and branches.

This one is getting worse.  As of this morning it was going to weaken to a tropical storm and land somewhere mid-NJ.  Now the national news just said it is instead strengthening and one likely scenario is a direct landfall at Ocean City, MD.  If it goes just a hair farther south it will come right up the bay as a full-strength hurricane...

Thanks Techntrek!  We've decided to come home early Sunday.  Hopefully we will be out of town before the storm is too bad.  I guess we'll have to pay close attention and not check out from reality like we usually do when we camp.

I would try to get out of the way of the storm as early as possible.  if you wait too long and there is flooding or other items you need to get around you will also have 18 foot of trailer to get around.  I'm setting up my r-pod this weekend as a shelter in case of flooding or power outages due to the storm.  I plan to fill the fresh water tank and have 3 fully topped batteries and about 100 lbs of propane.  We have been flooded before and without power so well water we can not get to.  I'm also moving it out to our other property and putting it out in the field away from anything that may fall.  If I do this we will not need it.

Good idea on toping off the water tank.  I have several power backups but having the water itself ready to go is easy.

Our pod is parked 20-mins north in a field behind a friend's farmhouse.  It's safe there but the problem during Irene was that fallen trees and branches on the roads blocked our access to the farm.  Considering we're in flood Zone V, bringing the pod down to the house is not an option.  Did think a lot about hot showers in the pod bathroom during the aftermath of Irene....Tongue

Stay safe everyone.

It seems strange-  sitting here on the Gulf Coast of Florida-   enjoying some cooler, drier fall weather, and wishing everyone in the Northeast luck and safety as Frankenstorm trundles your way.  Usually we are apt to be in the crosshairs.

We have relatives in New Jersey, friends in New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

Also, an ex-wife in Maine-  too bad it couldn't all head there!

Stay safe everyone.

Crosshairs are right over me as of about noon on Tuesday, according to the storm track shown on the NOAA website.  I'm ready to go - extra gas for the Prius (which has been modified to power our house), full tank of propane for the big generator.  With winds of 65 mph and us at the end of a 20 mile run from the substation I expect to be without power for quite a while.  We always keep extra supplies so we didn't have to make a mad run to the store - although we did need extra candy for the big Halloween campout we attend every year and so we were there anyway on Saturday.  An entire aisle of water - gone.  Half of the toilet paper was gone, half of the bleach.  Surprisingly the milk was all there.

Prayers to everyone that will be affected by this.

Good luck to all Podders. Techntrek, I think you get the award for being the most prepared! We are in upstate NY so our prep was just making sure we had food and water, and getting all potential dead limbs down in surrounding trees and having enough gas for our generator. Stay safe out there!

Latest update puts the eye almost right over us probably around 6 am tomorrow, and now it will still be at hurricane strength even that far inland.  We will be sleeping downstairs tonight since our house is surrounded by trees.  Our power went out early this time - around 11:30 am - so I've had our alternative power cranked up since then.

I was just watching the storm updates on CNN. I hope everyone in the path is okay. We are going to get some rain here in New Brunswick Canada but most of the storm is going inland. I have family in Ontario so I hope they come through this okay. The last time a hurricane hit Ontario was Hazel in 1954.

Looks like most people to the west & south of the eye got off pretty easy, compared to some of the damage farther north.  While we lost power fairly early that has been the only major issue for us.  I do see one tree that snapped fairly far from our house but it isn't something I need to worry about right now.  Hope everyone else is ok.

We are getting wind, but not a drop of rain.  An amazing storm that can be on the east coast and in Wisconsin at the same time.  We are fine here in Wisconsin, but I worry about those in the East.

Glad all is safe, Podders are a resilient group of well informed strong and prepared people, its all the camping lists we all have made over the years and then started trimming down we dont need, this, and this and pretty soon , you have a mean and lean list, it kinda boils down to survival of the fittest, God bless all. stay safe.

We did OK at my location in Southern-NJ.  Only about 3-4 inches of rain and top winds of 68-MPH.  Had some tree limbs come down and the power wire detached from the house, due to the wind, but we never lost power.  We did get the Jayco home prior to the storm and it and the R-POD did well in the backyard.  They both look like someone splattered them with pieces of leaves.

The size of the thing is just over the top!  The cold front that we have here in northern Florida is being caused by Sandy!  She is forcing cold air from western Canada down here.  Below normal temps and windy.  Not bad though.  I am not about to complain.  I'm happy to see eveyone on here seems to be okay!

We just got power back late last night and were really lucky that Sandy gained speed and hit land a few hours before high tide.  We had expected it to completely flood the basement and even get a few inches on the first floor of the house. The surge came right up to the bottom of our front step then retreated and dumped what looks like the entire contents of Long Island's recycling depot and their compost pile around our house.  Still cleaning up that mess :( but glad it wasn't as bad as predicted for us.

Our pod is safe 20-mins north at a friend's farm.

We spent until last Saturday, the 10th, without power. Had a generator for the last five days- on loan from my car mechanic who got his power back sooner. So we had heat after I wired it into the steam boiler control line, and some lights on extension cords but no TV, Internet or phone without real electric. Then it turned out the backup battery on the FIOS box fried the incoming network box so that had to be replaced. Now we are back to standard communication levels.

I spent several days with the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance advance team visiting the shore communities hit by Sandy- too much destruction.... Then I ended up recruited to be the Presbytery Recovery Coordinator for our area of NJ north of Atlantic City. It will be a long term process to get the life of these towns and communities back to a sense of "normal", whatever that may end up being.

I hope all our neighbors fared well and are back to their regular lifestyles without lingering after effects.

Glad to hear you've got power and that you had a generator to heat the house for the last few days.  We also were lucky enough to get one on loan from someone who never lost power and it helped us power our pumps and fans for the basement and also the heaters for the upstairs.  It gets really cold when you're airing-out/drying your basement! Star

Several times we had wanted to bring the pod down to the house but the roads were all still blocked between us and the friend's farm so we had to boil hot water for bathing.

It was actually surreal that the Red Cross Disaster Relief vehicle and the Meals on Wheels Van pulled up in front on our house and offered us hot food, water and mops.  We luckily didn't need anything so didn't accept anything but it felt so odd to be the target of the local Red Cross especially when friends and family in NY and NJ were much worse off.

Over the past week, we've still had the occasional brown-outs and internet/TV connection problems and are using our phones and old battery powered alarms clocks from way back when.

Hope everyone is doing well and is staying warm and dry.

We lucked out up he in upstate New York, lost power for about a day. My sister has a house on LBI (barrier island off of NJ). Lots of destruction there, but her town, Baregat Light, protects their primary dunes and therefore, the town suffered very little damage. We need to learn to respect Mother Nature!

Hi, everyone. Since we got power back I have been very busy as the Presbytery of Monmouth (NJ) Diaster Recovery Coordinator. The presbytery is a Presbyterian Church political group which includes a number of local churches generally in a geographical area. Monmouth includes the counties in NJ in the northeast shore quadrant- from just north of Atlantic City to Sandy hook, in to Perth Ambay and down the turnpike towards south of Trenton to Mt Holly then over to the coast. So all the shore areas you saw on TV are in the area. The national Presbyterian Disaster Assistance organization works thru the presbyteries to provide long term recovery aid to the communities affected. So after I toured the shore areas with some of the PDA response team on the Friday and Saturday following Sandy, I was asked to lead the presbytery recovery team. We have been busy meeting with other volunteer organizations at the local, county and state levels, and communicating with all the churches around the country that have offered people, money and stuff to aid our people. The damage on the shore is devastating. From the outside it doesn't look bad in a lot of places (except the barrier islands that got washed away) but then you realize that blocks and blocks of homes, stores, churches and other buildings had sea water up to a couple of feet deep in the first floors, and you start to understand the extent of the damages. Recovery will be a long time coming. Fortunately, PDA is a long term recovery organization, so we will be around for a long time offering aid- from rebuilding to caregiving.
In any event, it has been busy month, so we haven't been contributing much. The Free Spirit has been winterized and covered with the camouflage cover. Unfortunately, our church annual meeting is the Sunday of the winter camp, so we can't make it. We will try to get out if there is a warm spell, tho. Still have to get the light upgrade... The to do list has gotten even longer since retirement....
Other than all that, we are all doing well.

Walt

Thanks for your service!  We have relatives that were pretty much at or near Ground Zero in Tom's River,
and although they seemed to make out all right, it was a nasty situation for many in that area.  Seaside
Heights took it on the chin and softened the blow for those just a mile or so inland.  That area may never
be the same.

Good works, stay safe.
