Subject: Winter Camping French Creek Pa

Trying to get a feel of how many people would be interested in a Camping Trip to French Creek State Park outside Reading Pa.  Last year 3 Pods joined up and had a great time.  I'm looking at January 11-13, 2013 as a possible date.

Edit - 10/23/12 9:53 PM - if this date is not good we can be flexible to other dates.  I pulled this one out of the air.

Edit 10/26/12 10:22 PM - Putting the date of Jan 25-27 out there to see if that would be better

Would love to, but it's a bit too far for us to do from Charlotte in the middle of winter!

I was hoping we could join you and meet some other podders but I have a class that weekend.  There is a winery just down the road from French Creek, J Maki Winery at French Creek Ridge Vineyard.  I was there a few years back and it was very nice.

We are about an hour from French Creek so we may take a drive to say hello after my class is over.

We'd be game for it! We really like the park. (And the company!)

We went to the J Maki winery last year, remember Peter--very pleasant, but very pricey!

Don't change the weekend because of us, my husband is apprehensive about winterizing, de-winterizing, camping in the cold, and winterizing again. This is our first RV and everything is so new to us.

We live in Montgomery county near Lansdale so we will definitely stop by when you all are there.

wildflowerz - you do not need to de-winterize the unit. Camping at that time we keep them winterized and use the HEATED Restrooms that French Creek has.  As much as I hate to say it we also use as many paper products to keep clean up easy and for the pots and pans we (meaning my wife) used I put in the back of the truck to wash at home.  As far as heating the Pods once they are heated up they tend to keep the heat in.  Just make sure your propane bottle is full (last year mine went empty early Saturday morning - shame on me as I have 2 20 lbs on the camper) or you will have electric so you can use an electric heater also.  We carry bottled water to drink and also a 5 gallon jug for any washing that we may want to do but can also get water in the restrooms.

Just throwing it out there..

Know Lansdale some as I grew up in Abington/Willow Grove area but moved to Berks 20 Years now.

There is close by in Berks

Manatawny Creek Winery - http://www.manatawnycreekwinery.com/ - http://www.manatawnycreekwinery.com/  have not been there yet but from there site "We have a tasting room in the winery that is open to the public every day where we provide complimentary tastings of our wines. The wide variety of wine styles ensures everyone will find a wine to suit his or her taste. We hope you will come visit us!"

Depending on how far people want to drive in the  Kutztown area there are 4 and also an interesting Micro Brew Place.

Berks County also has the Berks County Wine Trail http://www.berkscountywinetrail.com/ - http://www.berkscountywinetrail.com/

We won't be able to make it, because we live too far away in Minnesota. But, this is helpful information about how we might use our camper in the Winter (I capitalize the seasons, because they all seem to hit with such force around here that they deserve respect ) if we ever muster the courage. I grew up in NY State and am very familiar with Pennsylvania; so, I imagine you have to be pretty flexible about winter camping plans. I'd think towing through PA's hills in a snowstorm would be beyond the scope of fun. Right?

The shape of the rpod's roofline seems to lend itself to the notion of winter camping more than most trailers. It's seems like it would have a pretty good tendancy to shed snow; and, if we can find and seal the air leaks that our 173 suffers, it should be better than most campers for keeping the chill tolerable. I'm intrigued.

I'll add a link to the thread on the 2013 NE Roundup for those interested. Big smile

I saw the Walmart has a $59 Black Friday deal for a portable electric fireplace unit. There's no room in our 152 for something like that unless it's right under the thermostat Ouch but maybe the 171s might be interested if they don;t use their dinette table? I think it would fit right up between the dinette benches.

Just wanted to check if there is already a thread for this Winter Camp event on the other forum?  I looked but didn't see one and just wanted to check 1) If it was ok to crosspost there to get more attendees 2) If it's an open event and 3) If I should make a fb event for this when .

Just checking so I don't tread on any toes that I'm prone to do Tongue

We could winter camp in southern Indiana, tonight, temps went from 55 to a low tonight of 27, hard rain during the day , and now blowing snow. the wind is blowing 40 to 50 mph, trees a dancing and the lights have flickered several times. I hope the juice does not go off. I have a generator if needed, but I would rather camp in the Pod.

hi all :) hope you are all having a nice holiday season. we were wondering if there are any specifics about this event yet such as which sites people will be staying at. does everyone usually stay in a section in the same area or stay all over and then meet up to say hi? also, when do people usually arrive? friday or saturday? look forward to hearing back from you :)

I'm not sure that anyone has booked any sites yet, but I'm ready to do it.  Head count on who is coming so we know how many sites we'll need?  I believe we were talking about doing the last weekend of January?  Right now they show C32, C33, C35, C36, C37, C38 all available that weekend.

I just looked through last year's thread and pulled out this info...

http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/findapark/frenchcreek/ - http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/findapark/frenchcreek/

Camground map: http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/ucmprd1/groups/public/documents/document/dcnr_004688.pdf - http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/ucmprd1/groups/public/documents/document/dcnr_004688.pdf

From Podsible Dream:

We recommend, on the basis of flatness and ease of using an R-Dome or Pop-up cover next to the R-Pod, the sites C-1 thru C3, 14, 15, 32, 33, 35, 36, 37, 44, 45, 46, 48. The website lists which ones are pet (dog) friendly. The high numbers are ADA with large paved areas. If we have our druthers we will probably pick C33.

Looks like Podsible was on C33, I was on C35, Rpodcamper C37

sorry started this but have not followed up on this.  Who all is thinking of coming?  what weekend are you available?  jan 18-20 or jan 25-27?  No need to un winterize your camper as the state park has heated bath houses to use.  Lets get a count and pick a weekend end.  I can do either weekend

We are still available the weekend of jan 25th.  We are still thawing out from going to the Mummer's Parade but we should be able to handle some more cold weather by then.

We will be away the third weekend but do what works for the most people.

Looks like there are conflicts for either weekend.  Since the discussion has mostly been about the last weekend I think that is what we need to go with.  I wish everyone could make it!  Cry

Let's have everyone weigh in over the next two days and then by Saturday night we can start booking sites.  Considering how many open sites there were last year I'm not worried about getting 3-4 contiguous sites even if we wait a few more days.

I'm available Jan 25 and ready to book.  Wish we could have found a date to work for everyone.

I was thinking we could visit Hopewell Furnace in the morning that is right down the road from the camp sites and in the afternoon go visit a winery about 25 minutes away that offer free wine tastings.  Saturday Night Dinner as a potluck dinner.

Or feel free to plan other activities.

No need to unwinterize your r-pod as there are heated Bath houses at the State Park.  Paper Plates to reduce the clean up along with throw away silverware.  Carry a full Propane bottle to heat your camper or use an electric heater as we will have hookups.

Still bundle up but looks to be a fun weekend.  Last January not may of the sites were occupied but there are people using the campground year round.  .

We are looking forward to the weekend.  We'll go ahead and make our reservations also.  It will either be our last trip out in our rPod or our first trip in our new Keystone Passport.  Since our good weather travel includes three dogs we needed to get something bigger.  We'll miss the rPod but the dogs will enjoy having a little space to stretch out.

All of the sites are still open around C33, we need to be sure someone books that site since it has a lot of room (for the "tent city") and can be used as the main site.  I was about to but I need to confirm if my kids are coming or not before I book.

Sandy is an unprecedented disaster for the NJ NJ area. The efforts of the faith based groups like the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance are geared to long term recovery (LTR). Organization to encompass all the aspects of LTR is not easy and is not an instant gratification process.
We are organizing groups called LTR Committees at the county level to coordinate volunteer efforts in long term recovery. Our committee overlaps both counties on the north end of the Jersey Shore, Monmouth and Ocean. At a training this weekend, we learned that these two counties had the highest number of FEMA claims in the northeast. We see a long road ahead of us to rebuild the homes of those affected and renew the infrastructure of the Shore.
It is only now that folks are able to return and start assessing the damage that the storm wrought.
We anticipate that our group will be involved in recovery efforts (not as a return to normal, but as arriving at a new normal) for another three to five years. It is hard preaching patience to an instant gratification culture, however, that is what will be needed here.
In the meantime, I have been at many meetings and am part of the group trying to get volunteers to places where assistance is urgently needed. I Have been learning how t respond to these appeals and get help where it is needed.

We would love to be part of your get together. I hope your weekend provides the same HD memories as the winter camp last year does for us even now.

Walt

Have a good time you guys.  My pod has been put away for the remainder of the winter.  I would definitely be up for something in early to mid may.

Wow Guys/Gals are you going to get the temps they are predicting for Southern Indiana, its 19 right now (816 pm 1/21/13. They are calling for 8 to 10 above zero tuesday morning and light snow, a hi tomorrow of 22 and 32 on wedneday. That does not sound like fun. I bet the floor of the pod gets cold as the air blows under it. I am staying next to the fireplace. I am also breaking out the long underware (bottoms) for work tomorrow as I spend some time outside. Brrrr I am finding it hard to believe that spring will ever get here.

Are you not on an electric site?  30 amps will support two electric heaters, plus another one on the 20 amp outlet at the power pole.  Might be barely enough in a pup at 10 F  Big smile

hi all. we've still got a site reserved but we're watching the weather closely to see the amount and timing of the snow fall. we may not be able to make the full weekend due to not being comfortable trailering in that kind of weather. we're still hoping it may bypass us or not be as bad as predicted but regardless we will make an effort to come up on saturday even if we don't end up bringing the r-pod.

I believe I'm making something with chicken and stuffing in the slow cooker - throw it in, go hit the furnace and wineries, come back to the pods and it will be ready.  Ice cream sounds great!  Cool

I'm keeping an eye on the snow situation too, but so far I'm still planning on making an attempt Friday afternoon.  I may track down the phone number of either the campground or the furnace's visitor center to find out what the local conditions are before I leave.

Thanks for the offer.  I considered it last winter, however determined it was a bit further than I was willing to travel.  This year, I'm without, I'm without the Pod and really don't want to hook-up the Jayco, since I use it for household storage for the winter.

Make sure you folks take plenty of pics and post them, with a trip report.

It looks like it will be a game time decision for us.  We're watching the weather closely for snow.  At any rate, we would arrive early afternoon Saturday for a one-night stay.

We hope to make it.

rpodcamper will be bringing a tent (enclosed carport) which we can keep somewhat heated while we are in there.  Last year on Saturday we hung around the fire outside until it got too cold and then we went inside our tent city with heaters.  I brought a big propane powered campfire which we had going full-blast, which I'll have again.

I will have the Car Port with me it is enclosed 10X20 and a MR Buddy Portable Heater that gives off 18,000 BTU of heat.  Last year we used a r-dome and an easy up with a tarp around it and was able to keep in some heat with TechnTrek's Portable propane fireplace.

I need to see if I have some firewood to bring but will check in the morning.

rudyunknown - we will try to heat the tent the best we can.  I also have a 9X12 outdoor mat to put down on the ground which hopefully will help.

Good news - Bad news  The good: We still plan to come up sometime Sat. The bad: We won't be camping. Unhappy I work 3-11 tonight (Friday). We had planned to come up earlier in the day and set things up, then I would leave for work from the campsite and return after my shift. It's about an hour in good weather and I (the wife / better half) lol would be traveling alone. We will try to catch up with everyone at the winery or back at the campsite. Any suggestions on what to bring for pot luck dinner? If I don't hear back we'll wing it. Wink Stay safe everyone and hope to see you tomorrow.

I'm still on track to leave work at 1:15, leave home around 3, to arrive around 5 so hopefully I'll miss most of the snow while I'm on the road.  I had my truck hooked up to the pod so all I had to do was a few minor things before leaving, but of course - hello Mr. Murphy -  this morning my car's starter decided to die (not the battery, the starter itself).  So I had to scramble to UNHITCH the truck so I could get to work.  Grrrr.

I'm bringing a chicken dish for the potluck.  Is anyone bringing a dessert?

I have brownies in the oven right now.  I'll be bringing them for desert.  I'm also brining barbecue beef and beans for the potluck.

Tim just got a call that the cap for his truck is in.  He is having that put on and then we will be on the way.

Visited with my folks last night.  My mom thinks we are crazy for winter camping.  Then we heard stories of how great ice fishing was when she grew up in Minnesota.  I guess if we had a frozen lake to cut a hole in we wouldn't be so crazy.  Smile

Enjoy, y'all! The snow will warm things up a bit, so you shouldn't be as chilly as last year.
Be safe! Our best wishes to the old timers and the newbies....

wildflowerz, lol!  We could go down to one of the two lakes in the park and cut a few holes.

I arrived much later than expected due to major snow-related backups, but we (me and my older daughter) arrived safely and quickly set up camp.  The 'burban handled beautifully in the several inches of snow.  As I told the group, if I had the old Sienna I would have gotten stuck either a mile from home or a mile from camp.  No problems on the road at highway speed even though the roads were barely plowed.

We took dinner over to the tent and enjoyed the company of the fellow ice fishers ... I mean winter campers.  Some turned in earlier, but rpodcamper and I stayed up a while chatting.  The carport/tent is working well, not quite as breezy as the setup last year.  rpodcamper has an 18,000 btu catalytic heater, I have a radiant heater and the propane campfire.  Considering how cold it is out there we were pretty comfortable.  My thermometer reads 12 F right now.

Well, unfortunately it looks like we won't make it. Enough snow and ice here in MD to make us think twice. Had we been able to leave yesterday before the extra snow I think it would have worked out.  Hopefully we can make the next one.

Enjoy your trip!
