Does anyone have any suggestions?  I found this one over at Overstock.com - looks pretty good?

http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Select-Luxury-Home-RV-8-inch-Queen-Short-size-Memory-Foam-Mattress/5699186/product.html - http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Select-Luxury-Home-RV-8-inch-Queen-Short-size-Memory-Foam-Mattress/5699186/product.html

The price is "okay", but may be worth the investment?

Hello and welcome to the pod family.  I bought my RV bunk mattresses from excel distributers.  I actually bought the inner spring so that it would emulate what I sleep on at home.  It is just as comfortable, if more so, than my mattress at home.  I love it.  Here is the link...

We bought a Bed-In-A-Box mattress and have been very happy with it. They have a great return policy, a great warranty, a great BBB record, and their customers recommend them (we certainly do). The PacBed Original (the style we bought) in RV queen size is about twice as expensive as the one you linked to, but much less than a TempurPedic, to which it rates favorably. I also like that it's made in America. I've got no problem with a lot of things made overseas, even in China. But, in this case I got sucked in a bit by the "cheap imitations sometimes use toxic chemicals" talk found on Bed-In-A-Box's website. Not sure if it's true, but it certainly seems plausible. Anyway, if I had to do it over again, I'd buy from them again.

We just added a 3 inch memory foam topper to the factory mattress.  We both think it is a comfortable combo, but long-term I don't think the factory mattress is going to hold up.  Might be a cheaper option short-term.

Here's a 3 inch mattress 'topper' I've been looking at:

It's a lot cheaper $68 but I haven't had any experience using one yet.

we are getting a 100% natural Latex foam mattress topper.  You breath in enough junk from the off gassing of all the synthetics.  Its really comfortable, we have two at home.  They last for years.  You can just get a topper or a core and forget the fancy layers and covers and keep the price down.  We just wrap ours with a sheet and mattress pad.  Best mattress I have had.  Memory foam is made from petroleum, yuck.

Did some research and I find that foam mattresses, for me are very hot to sleep on.  The foam does not allow any air circulation.  I did find a very good pillow top mattress at Amazon for $399. which others had recommended.  RV sized and will ship at that price.

After 2 years our RP175 high quality mattress (sarcasm intended) is really sagging-even with a foam topper. My wife has degenerative disc disease, now with a spinal fusion and a titanium cage. She doesn't make it long in a prone sleeping position, particularly in the Pod. Normal pillow top innerspring mattresses don't do her any good, so we just bought the memory foam short queen from Overstock. We've got a ten night outing next month. Here's hoping this will lessen the time she has to snooze sitting up on the couch of the Pod.
We're also due for a new mattress for home. Hopefully this will help us with that decision.
Figuring the best mattress type is like Ford, Chevy, Dodge, or Toyota. What is great to some just stinks to others.

For my 176T - In early June I purchased a 5 1/2 inch foam mattress from  http://MattressInsider.Com/ - MattressInsider.Com  (short queen 60 x 75). It fits tightly in my 176T when closed (tent down) and well into the tent area (63 x 48) when open with a 27" overlap into the seating area - I added a 12" board across the table support to support the 3-4" that extends into the table opening and one of the small cushions. This leaves a smaller area for a small, lite table that I purchased for 2 people sitting across one another.  I'm using the heavy table outside under the Dome.

This mattress ($277) has been really great 1 week into my 5 week trip to Maine. On the hard tent base my wife says it's as good as our $1500 matress at homeTongue.  I plan to put the heavy table in my garage when I return - too bulky and heavy!  I'll make some other fill boards to replace the heavy table when transporting cushions & matress between locations.

I'd love to post some pictures ... but I can't figure out how to use photos from my I-pad2 'camera roll' and this forum.  Does anyone know how to do this?

3 weeks to go in Maine (1st two days were rainy with lots of drippy spots in the Dome ... Inside Pod was dry except for some small damp spots in the foldout tent corners) and 1week allocated for traveling back to Atlanta!Smile

Bill, you will probably have to resize your photos first before uploading them to the site.  One of the downsides to this forum software is it won't automatically resize pics for you.  You may have to experiment to find a good size.

Once you are ready to upload a pic, you need to go to "advanced mode", either by using the "Post Reply" button just under the last post on the left, or with the arrow that points to the upper-right just above the Quick Reply text box.  Then look for the little picture of a tree, and use the buttons on the left side to upload your picture.

I would love to find a mattress that is 2" shorted in both directions.  That would make it 1" shorter on each end and each side.  It would be a lot easier to put a sheet on.  Right now it is a very tight fit.

We just roll without sheets..

It's camping.. we use sleeping bags. Just left that factory duvet thing in place, throw our double bag on, and good to go. No more trouble to wash the bags when we get home than a set of sheets..

Our sleeping bags are way too warm in the pod so we are using sheets and quilts. I find it a bit easier not to use fitted sheets. We have never used that ugly bed cover that came with the pod. It will be mint if we ever sell our unit.
We learned quickly -but not quite quickly enough- to keep our heads down when making the bedPinch!

We have a 176-T, so here is what we did. Our Criteria:

  • We don't like the air mattress feel - when I roll over, she acts like a fishing bobber.
  • We like the feel of the memory foam, but not the heat retention.
  • We like to sit around the dinette (all sides) so we wanted to keep the "fold-ability" during the day.

Our solution:

  • 4 inch memory foam from Wally-World (2 inch memory foam with 2 inch foam backer), cut to size with a razor blade
  • 2 inch down-alternative pillow top bed topper from Target; as is. Technically too long, but is held in place by elastic and fits just fine.

The topper from target allows the mattress to "breathe" and the memory foam from Wally provides support. The system is still foldable for all-day dinette use, and, as a bonus, the folded system provides a backrest for dinette seating!Big smile

We just finished out first trip and it worked great - comfortable, not "sweaty," and slept like a baby.

Ryaninco, We bought a mattresses last month from FoamMattressDiscounts - we've used it about 8 nights and are very pleased.  Cost is a little less than Overstocks.  It was shipped free and we received within 2 days.  They even made some modifications to the mattress (made it a bit smaller) that we requested).

Just went ahead and picked up this 8" memory foam on Amazon.  Should have it in a few days... I've noticed on quite a few of these RV mattresses that it seems like the same manufacture making them but different dealers with their names on them.

We have a temperpedic at home now, which we absolutely love and after talking with my better half we just decided to replace the back breaker altogether...

We have used this mattress in the "full" size for a few years now, and we are extremely pleased with it.  Apparently, it is now on sale with a nice price reduction.  There are over 3,000 reviews of the mattress on the website garnering almost a five-star review.   We have a 177 model and by using the full size mattress rather than a queen or RV size, it allows you to tuck in the sheets and quilts in the available extra space (which is not much extra space).

Dang I hate buying mattresses!  Nothing, to me, is a bigger crapshoot.  You see claims for 2,3 or 4 layers of this, that or the other kinds of foam and in whatever thickness.  How in the world does anyone make sense of it?  I don't generally like to buy "brand names" (Sealy, Serta, etc) just for the heck of it but, where mattresses are concerned, that's about all I recognize.  Frustrating but, as bad as the FR mattress is, got to do something.  Wish I could do like Hogone & just sleep on wood. LOL

We encountered the dreaded R-Pod mattress on trip number one. I checked on line, did the research, etc. Because we have a R-Pod 172 that has two bunks up front and a dinette that makes a short queen in the back. We like the short queen but you have to put it up and take it down, so what to do. I bought a sheet of 1/4 inch Luan plywood and measured the length of the short queen dived by 4 and made 4 separate pieces. Now what to do for a hinge ? I folded each piece and used Duct tape on the long side, flipped it over and another strip of Duct tape. I ended up with the stiffner with Duct tape hinges that could be folded up for storage and folded out for use. I put the 1/4 in stiffner between the factory cushions and ( don't laugh ) bought a 3 inch dual foam one piece short queen mattress from Walmart for 99 bucks. When ready for bed the table goes down, the factory cushions then the Luan stiffner then the foam mattress then Donna makes the Bed. When done I roll up the foam mattress and secure with 2 bungees and store it and the Luan stiffner on the lower bunk. It sleeps really good, I mean really good and we have the best of both worlds. It takes less than 5 minutes to set up or tear down. walah problem solved for less than $120.00 bucks. We really wish we had a 179 so we could leave the bed made up, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

I have talked to a couple of other posters and they just bought a standard size double mattress. The length is the same but a couple of inches narrower on each side. The prices of these mattresses are cheaper.

I am currently using a topper l had from are previous TT on top FR issue Matt. FR Matt is of poor quality. They should just reduce the price and let you choose your own.

Nice idea but FR probably spends $50 or less on those mattresses.  If they cut the price by that much, it wouldn't come near to covering the retail price we have to pay &, at the same time, people would probably complain that their trailer didn't even come with a mattress!  And there are likely some folks who don't have a problem with the factory mattress.  (Lucky dogs!)

I have found the pod mattress to be no better or worse than the mattress I have been sleeping on in my pop-up for the past 6 years.   It's a camper and the mattress it comes with is WAY better than the ground and a mat which is were I started. We might get a topper for it, but I'm not planning on spending another $250 or more for the small amount of time we use it.  If I slept in the pod every day, now that would be a different story.

Yep, the ground and a mat or pad used to be fine back in my backpacking days. Take a back injury or two + a few extra birthdays .. Well, a few extra bucks to get a better mattress doesn't seem like a bad idea. Even one night on a bad mattress is something I pay for for a week.

It seems like most manufacturers know this is an area where they can cut costs. We've had 6 TT's, made by 4 different manufacturers. Five of the 6 mattresses were poor. The one in our Arctic Fox was the exception. Our first 2 trailers, we put up with the mattresses, as we were younger and more resilient with fewer aches and pains. Over the years, we've tried replacement inner springs, memory foam mattresses, regular form toppers, and memory foam toppers--all with varying degrees of comfort success. I swear that they found the mattress from our RPod in the garbage dump and installed it in our new Kodiak! Well, memory foam topper for the time being.

My thoughts on it have always been that the manufacturer has about a 1 in 1000 chance of putting in a mattress any particular owner actually LIKES.. so.. they put in a "mattress" that is not "overly expensive", save on construction costs, and (at least theoreticaly) end user costs, on an item MOST won't like no matter what the manufacturer chooses.

I am curious about the 9 inch memory foam mattress from Amazon mentioned above.... We sleep on mostly on our side and even with the factory plus a 3 inch memory foam topper, we still get pressure spots on our sides.

Please let me know what you think about the 9 inch? does it sink to wood?

Huh? That must be a crappy topper. I've got two 10in memory foam mattresses, one a regular size and one is a queen and their both nice and firm. My son's room has a six inch memory foam regular size and it too is nice and firm. That one is on a futon with mire mesh and bars supporting it, nothing else. You don't feel any of that at all.

Oh, and they were all purchased off of ebay and I think the most expensive one was the queen size that I sleep on and bought for $375 delivered.

I could take the last 2 posts and combine them to make a joke.  But I won't.  I'll just let your mind wander for a second...  Clap

Bumping this thread.  Someone mentioned getting a new mattress on another thread which got me to start looking around (not happy with the one that came with our Salem).  Any updates from those that posted here?

We have used ours for several camping trips.  Best 369 ever spent.  Sleep through the night with no issues. Do suffer from lower back pain but because of the matress and sleeping in the camper I seem to get a better night sleep. I plan on buying one for my bedroom at home as well.

We got the short queen from Overstock and it was the best thing we purchased wasted our time with toppers and wasted our money before we decided to bite the bullet and invest in our sleep

I've posted this in other locations on this forum, but our 179 has the best RV bed we've ever had in 40 years of Rving.  We bought this from Amazon: Paramount PSR6074 60"x74" Premium Pillowtop Mattress. It's pricey at $388.88, but worth every cent.  I'm a big guy at 250 lbs and it works perfectly for us.  We may be moving into a bigger rig this summer, and the first thing I did was look at the Amazon page to see if they sell a 60x80 for a full size queen--and they do!
