Did I read somewhere we are supposed to grease the ball and inside the hitch?

Greasing just the ball will do.  It prevents rust from building up on your hitch ball; it also keeps the noise down (a bit).

There's special hitch ball lube (like http://www.campingworld.com/shopping/item/reese-teflon-ball-lube/9192 - this ) that you can find at automotive or RV stores, but I just use bearing lube that I've got sitting in my garage.  You should probably buy a hitch ball cover (like http://www.campingworld.com/shopping/product/hitch-ball-covers/6290 - this ) for times when you're not towing your trailer - it'll keep the lube on the ball and prevent you from accidentally getting grease on your pants.

This is good advise on the ball, I always remove my ball and receiver because if not then they always seem to connect with my shines. Ouch! I have always used a old tennis ball to cover the ball, yea I know I am cheep. Clark

I've never lubed my hitch balls and haven't had a problem with wear, rust or noise.

I did get right on Camping World and order ball grease and a cover.  My husband is probably going to give me grief over that when he reads the tennis ball post.  Ermm  Oh well, it was only a couple of bucks.  The worst part is that it is free shipping for $50 and over so I had to spend another $40 after that!  My favorite thing to do, shop for camping items.
