I did a search - no results so here goes.

Our nice tongue jack after 2 1/2 years has started making LOUD noises. A tech removed the cover and water and rust was everywhere, including in the motor.

The trailer is stored outside, the cover to the entrance hole for the manual crank on top was in place and I simply don't know where the water came from!

So,  ... poor (lousy) design?   freak incident, to me personally? (NOT unusual!) or  ???

I am covering the unit with a plastic bag now but the tech says the motor is ruined and will soon stop operating.

Ideas are appreciated.

I'm guessing the cover for the motor has a crack or something that let water in.

Electric motors are pretty simple. If you disassemble it, you could probably clean and lube it.

Thanks for response.
No visible cracks, I suppose the 'plug' for the crank hole may have been slightly open (?) but it was a lot of water for a long time. I am baffled but apparently no one else has this problem so this is a freak incident - sigh, happens to me a lot.

Option:  manual crank?  Mine is now 14+ years old, never cover it except when in storage over the winter in northern Michigan.  Good exercise, if you are able, and burn a few calories to boot.
