We have just returned from a 3 week trip with our Rpod 179. We drove from our home in Chapel Hill NC to central Florida and camped, bikes and paddled for 3 weeks . We have a new to us 2022 Ford F-150 3.5L Ecoboost and this was the first trip for this tow vehicle. The truck had 11746 miles on it when we started and we drove 2025 miles during our trip. We averaged 11.2 mpg throughout the entire trip. We went to the local land fill as we left Chapel Hill and weighed our rig. The following is what we found……..
Ford F150 pickup w/ ARE camper shell (160#), driver(170#), passenger (125#), full gas tank(36 gal+/- @ 6#/gal=216#),2 full propane tanks(one on TT tongue, 1 in truck(65#),2 Trojan 6v batteries (approx. 120#) on tongue,18 gal water(@8#/gal=144#), wdh, canoe(36#)and racks(22#), 2 bikes and rack(130#)on rear of RPod, food, Honda generator(47#), clothes, assorted camping and other gear(biking, canoeing, photography), tools and supplies
First pass-Ford and RPod, wdh connected Ford front axle 3180 Ford rear axle 3900 Both Ford axles 7080 includes tongue weight(520#) Combined Ford and RPod 10980 RPod axle 3900
Second pass-Ford and RPod, wdh not connected Ford front axle 3080 Ford rear axle 4080 Both Ford axles 7160 includes tongue weight(600#) Combined Ford and RPod 10980 RPod axle 3820
Third pass-Ford only, wdh installed Ford front axle 3320 Ford rear axle 3240 Ford both axles 6560
Tongue weight
With wdh connected Ford w/ Rpod – Ford w/o Rpod 7080-6560=520# or 520/3900=13.33%
wdh not connected Ford w/ RPod – Ford w/o RPod 7160-6560=600# or 600/3820=15.7%

Firestone makes air springs for the rear. They will bring the rear of the vehicle up where it should be. Will make it drive better and bring the headlights down. |

I have a couple of observations. One, I think your Rpod is overloaded. If the combined weight of the truck & trailer is 10,980, and the truck alone is 6,560, then that means the Rpod is 4,420. Our Rpod has a GVWR of 3,792, so you're around 600 lbs overweight. Two, with or without your WDH, the rear axle of your F150 is over the 3,800 lb weight limit. You need to get some of that tongue weight off the truck. I agree totally. That was one reason we wanted to weigh the combination and get some real numbers with the new tow vehicle. I neglected to note that our 2015 179 GVWR is 3785. so, we are actually more than 600# overweight!! some of the weight in the back of the F150 will be easy to remove-firewood, extra camp chairs, some extra tools, etc. some will be harder to eliminate. We plan to go through every part of the pod and remove all of the things that we haven't used. I don't know if we can find 600#'s, but I'm sue we will be surprised at all of the unused stuff.
