My 2016 179 has set up during the winter and been invaded by what appears to carpenter ants. Anyone had any experience eradicating these little suckers?

you could try setting off a couple bug bombs inside. close the windows, open all the cabinet doors, lift the bed plywood. Wash everything after or take it out before. Also spray pesticide underneath. Then put boric acid powder in the bottom of all the cabinets and storage areas, including inside the little louvered area under the bathroom.

There's lots of ant traps and sprays. Try more than one. I've had the most success following their trail back to the earth and spraying as much of its length as possible. They mark a route to food with scent and after finding it, rarely deviate. Spraying a large length of the trail poisons many in the hive and has stopped them for me.

Try diatomaceous earth too.

Last year we had ants in our 179.  I used diatomaceous earth in the area where they seemed most abundant, under the bed behind the shower.  I had limited success.  After observing them going under the paneling covering the front of the camper (inside the storage area) I drilled a few small holes in the panel and sprayed “Bug Stop” into the holes.  It seemed to have an effect for they immediately began coming out from between the panel and the floor.
Now I routinely sprinkle Terro (sp?) around the wheels, the supports and the tongue.  Anything that touches the ground and could provide access.

Thank you Marv. This sounds like what I am experiencing. Mine seem to like the ceiling paneling. Thank you for responding.

I bombed mine after 4th of july vacation week. I had a minor infestation of the tiny red/brown ants. They can be hard to get rid of. I closed up the doors windows, vents, and opened cabinets, then set off the bomb. My LP alarm went off for several hours. I haven't seen any since. I really try to watch for them while i'm camping, and I walk around every couple days spraying around the stabs. Once I climbed up on the ladder to check for debris before bringing in slide, and there were ants all over the roof. So you never know where they'll get in.

Carpenter ants need water. I had a problem with them at my house. This sent them running and keling over https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07D6WVZ9W/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

For decades we have used Terro in our garage, occasionally in the house (the few times we have ever had an issue with them), and a couple times in our 10+ year old 177.  I have never tried this on carpenter ants but on black, red and the tiny sweet sucking ants.  100% elimination and satisfaction every time - it is a great product.

Jim.

Thank you for your response.  Are there different applications of TORO?  If so which one did you use?

Hi Bob and Roz,

We like the Name as well.  Congratulations on picking out a Great Name!  We named ours when we picked it up back in March 2011.

The Terro we use (as far as I know it is the only one Terro has) is  5.4% sodium tetraborate decahydrate (borax).  Consistancy of a thin honey.  Just follow the directions on the bottle.  We normally put a few drops on a piece of thick paper or thin cardboard and place it in the path of where they travel.  Kind of fun to watch them as the process continues.

Terro also comes in a granular form as well.  That’s what I sprinkle around the stabilizers as well as the tires and tongue jack.  Trying to create a barrier to access.
