Hello R-Pod Travelers,
In a few weeks we'll be driving from Custer, South Dakota to Mammoth CG in east Yellowstone NP. Our R-Pod is being pulled by a 6-cylinder Toyota 4Runner. Any concerns taking I-90 to Sheridan and then jumping on US14? Wondering about mountain passes and fuel stops. Have any of you taken this route; any advice?
Thanks!
Jack

Should not be an issue, whatever route you take. Our Highlander V6 handled mountain driving quite well when towing our 179.

The only concern about out west right now is the fires. I think they are south of your route though. Still, you may encounter smoke from them.

Alan,
Did you take US14 over the Bighorns? There's a pass at 9,000 feet.
Stephen,
Fires have been burning near us for weeks (southern Oregon) smoke & ash daily occurrence. Not that we're used to it...

No, but I took some 8-9% grades in the Appalachians that only slowed me down by about 5 mph. I also drove over Raton Pass on the Colorado/New Mexico border with no issues.

Shouldn't be a problem unless you hit some strong head winds. Watch your mirrors and pull over if traffic starts to back up on the two lanes. Truck speeds on I-90 will give you a thrill as they do all of us who chose to travel at a reasonable speed when pulling a TT. Have fun, you'll see some beautiful country and meet some great people.

While you are in Custer, head down to Hot Springs S.D.  The Mammoth Site there was was one of the best things we did in the area.  It's only about 40 minutes away.

We did 14 and 14a through the Big Horn NF in July in a 2015 Frontier towing a 179 no problem on 14 but I would avoid 14a. I've done 14a twice with the trailer in both directions do-able but a bit hairy. If you have the time the Big Horn Canyon National Recreation Area is spectacular. In July the Big Horn NF was very crowded, overrun with ATV's and very smoky. I recommend Tie Flume camp ground.

We just returned to smokey southern Oregon so I thought I'd follow up on our trip. To be safe we decided to travel west on Hwy 16. The 4Runner did fine both pulling up and coming down the passes. Beautiful drive especially coming into Tensleep and again west out of Cody. Next time, whenever that will be, I'll try Hwy 14 to take in new and different scenery.

Thanks again everyone for your input. Happy trails!

We have taken that route twice as well as going on US14 with both a 2008 and 2013 Ford Explorer (V6) pulling a loaded (with full FW tank) 177.  Spectacular scenery and no issues.  We did utilize a Curt anti-sway bar link as we towed.
