First time to really us my A/C. Works great. The fan starts and runs for a few seconds, then the compressor starts. Is this typical? It would make an easier load on a generator.

Yes, that's normal. It's to get air flowing over the heat exchanger before the compressor comes on, which helps prevent freeze-ups.
