Geek  My wife and I are leaving Friday on a trip out west and wondered if anyone has any suggestions for "off the beaten path" campgrounds or boondock (distributed camping) areas.
Here is our proposed path
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF&msa=0&msid=103091139456049256732.00048a43702cb0d6f2bfc - http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF&msa=0&msid=103091139456049256732.00048a43702cb0d6f2bfc
Lamp As an aside, I wonder if our forum would support and benefit from a maintained list of HIGHLY recommended campgrounds and distributed camping / boondocking spots? Perhaps maintained on a map the way our owner locator works. If so maybe we do something like the map above and collaborate on it. (No trip plans just placemarks)

Can't help but will be watching this thread, as we plan to hit many of the same places next year.

+1, we plan on making this kind of trip in the next year or three.  Looking forward to good spots that don't cost arm+leg+firstborn.

The Camping Adventures forum is a good place to document individual campgrounds/locations that you find.  I'll be the first to admit there isn't much order to it - you can't look at a map or lookup by state/province.  A map sounds good, but even if its open to editing by all it will mean maintanence (and posting a review here plus a point on the map).  Maybe it would be easiest to post a review here with a link in the review to the location on Google Maps?  I could add sections by state/province, and move the existing reviews into those sections.

I just remembered there is a "camp ground" forum farther down on the main page, a better place for specific campground reviews.  I need to move a few of my reviews to that forum!

I have not spent a lot of time thinking this through but what I thought might be possible is to have a "My Maps" using Google Maps then those who wanted to participate could become collaborators and put place marks at recommended (exceptional) spots. Granted someone could inadvertently mess it up but if it is backed up / saved once a week the worse case is you lose the last week's posts...
As you can tell I am enamored with the idea of just being able to look at a map and know that placemark is in an interesting location.
Can this thread be move to the proper forum? My aplogies for starting this in the wrong forum; not sure how I missed it.

Moved.  No apologies necessary, maybe some forum cleanup is in order.  We recently asked for ideas for improvement, one could be adding/removing sub-forums.
