Subject: what are these fasteners?

Hi folks,

I need to remove my bathroom sink to get to a drain pipe that has become disconnected. I cannot figure out what the fasteners are. They aren't flat or phillips screws. They're square and everywhere in the pod.  Do I need an allen wrench? something else?  If you also happen to know the size that would be helpful when I go to buy whatever in need.

thanks!

Hello Julie,

The square drive screws are more technically called Robertson drive screws. You would need a square tip driver for them. They are common in RVs. You should be able to find the Robertson drive tips along with other types at your local hardware store. You can find short tips for screwdrivers with interchangeable tips or longer ones more suited to a drill/driver.

You need a square screwdriver aka a Robertson screwdriver. Any hardware store will have them. There are different sizes, be sure to get the right one.

Thank you! Are they standard sized or do you know what size they are (since I can't remove one to take it with me).

I believe a #2 size will be what you need. Although it would not hurt to pick up a set with different sizes if you can find one.

Sometimes they are called 'square drive trailer screws'...because they seem to be in every type of camper or cargo trailer ever made...almost...

Yes you can buy a set with those type of tips almost anywhere that sells tool and hardware.

They also work well in most small power screwdrivers and drill/drivers.

+1 they sell them in assortments at every hardware dealer. I have a screwdriver attachment with a #2 in a drawer, I use all the time. Don't buy one bit. Buy the assortment with a handle.

Robertson screwdrivers come in different colours (yellow, green, red & black), the ones in the RPod are "red robertsons"

Robertson screwheads are not common in the US since they are a Canadian invention - sorry bout that!:-)
