Hi all,

Finally broke down and got a Winegard Carryout and need to put a shelf near the TV for the receiver.

Would the inner wall below the TV be preferable to the outer wall below the radio?  Anyone know the approximate wall thickness?

The outside walls are 1 inch thick and filled with foam. Inside walls are generally better if you can access the other side of them. Depends on the layout of your trailer.

Well, the other side of the wall is the bathroom wall (see photo).  Note that the TV mounting bracket is already screwed in to the inside wall with no evidence of it on the bathroom wall.  Why would I need to access the other side of this wall?

Do you have a stud-finder? If so, you can locate where there is framing that you can use. You might be able to feel it as the wall will flex except where it is backed up. One risk of drilling into a wall is that there might be something behind it that would not do well with a drill hole such as a sewage tank vent stack or wiring. That is why you should make sure of where you are drilling. Access would also let you put in reinforcing wood for the shelf if there is not any in the place you want to mount your shelf.

I'm thinking of devising something that can attach to that cabinet next to the radio in some fashion.  I'm not a big fan of drilling holes in the R-Pod...

Am I missing something? How big is this thing?

Can't you just slide it into that opening in that cabinet we see with the radio? Maybe extend the depth with a thin piece of stained plywood?

I have a 196 and I just put a piece of wood in the opening of the shelf and screwed it down to the shelf.

The depth on that cabinet is only 5.5" and the unit (an HR-22 DirecTV receiver) needs about 14".  I'm looking at folding brackets (which could hold a small shelf) that could be attached to the cabinet on both sides of the opening.  That way the cabinet is not compromised when the receiver is not needed.

If I attached a permanent plywood shelf that extends that far out I'm sure that I'd knock myself unconscious some night at 3 AM.

To find or install something solid to attach to. I didn't know what was behind there in your model. In the 179 its the inside of the closet so when I added a little shelf for my portable electronics I added some blocking in the closet to support it.

In your case that won't work. I would still recommend the interior wall though if you do mount a shelf. The outside walls have nothing solid except the aluminum box tubing, which is pretty sparse.

Ok, can you fabricate a bracket, or use heavy duty zip ties, to attach the receiver UNDER that cabinet?

Super simple: drill a couple of 3/8" holes in the bottom deck of that opening, hold the unit up under the cabinet, pass a large 36" or 48" heavy duty zip tie thru the holes, then under and around the unit...then cinch it up tight. You could use a couple of rubber or felt 'feet' to cushion and protect it. Dunno, might need clearance for connectors on the back, but you can buy right angle 'F' connectors, or whatever it uses, to provide a closer fit.

I dunno, just trying to help...I watch pretty much ZERO tv and barely know anything about the set-top box that I think we are talking about.

In fact I removed the TV and the Microwave....but I DID keep the air conditioner!

Thumbs Up

I use Direct tv now in my pod (195) and all I use is an amazon firestick. Then I open a hotspot  connection to my phone, or my tablet, and I watch t.v. with no problem. M aybe i'm wrong, but I dont know why you need anything else.

Instead of places where I can establish a hotspot we frequent locations with notspots.

That cell-service thing can be a bit of an issue.

For myself, I haven’t watched “TV” in 20 years. If you frequent places with a very low but existing cell signal a weboost with a directional antenna does a great job of bringing in Internet. If you are down in a holler and there is no signal then mobile sat data is the only option and that’s very expensive. That’s when you get to enjoy being free of the internet. Read a book or bring some movies for those rainy days and enjoy!

Ha Ha. I'd just watched that movie a couple of weeks ago and thought the scene was appropriate. (btw I read the book first).
