I want to install (2) small fans in the upper vent to bring down refrig. temp.

can anyone tell me how to wire these so that they only come on when refrigerator is running and are automatic.  Can i just splice into the wires for the existing fan and run in series? will the existing theremostadt on the stock fan also run the 2 additional fans? any suggestion on waterproof fans? I bought the titan rack fan but returned it as the quality was horrible and I didnt want an additional automatic control.

Honestly I think you will be hard pressed to see big temp changes with multiple fans. My 178 has a single fan and the reefer cools as well as any of the same model, I did move my thermo switch so the fan comes on sooner and longer. Having said that you can add fans using the existing wiring and switch, that would be preferable. There has been numerous posts on adding an additional fan.

If you do add fans you'll want to connect them in parallel not series, so that they all get 12V.

Per your original question-
I also added 2 fans for the cooling of the fins and to exhaust hot air from the cavity behind the refrigerator.  I simply spliced the additional wiring for the second fan into the original fan wiring and it works perfectly.  I also moved the thermo switch  to the far right , just where the fins start.  both fans operate together automatically.

I installed the unit referenced in this link, it includes an on/off switch. One of these is plenty, it made a big difference in fridge performance compared to the stock fan:
