Two weeks ago we spent a week at Castaway's RV Resort, near Ocean City, MD on Rt. 611 (5 miles from OC).  The place was a rustic campground for decades.  We loved it, it has a private beach overlooking Assateague and shallow water for 100 feet out, no waves, perfect for the kids when they were young.  It was bought out a few years ago and 2 years ago everything was bulldozed and replaced.  Its now a 5-star RV resort - 5 stars from Woodall's and won best RV park in 2009 from some magazine.  We tried it for the first time last week.  Very nice, but now with a 5-star price.  The private beach went from almost our own private beach a few years ago to quite crowded now.  Still nice, a bar is right there on the beach.  Had live music Friday and Saturday night.  Pool was great, but we only used it the day it was threatening rain so we didn't lug all our stuff down to the beach to run back 10 minutes later (it never rained).

We had some problems, like they messed up our reservation.  We were supposed to be 3 sites from the beach but ended up 100 yards away.  Then the site we got was covered in trash.  The guy that came to clean it argued with me about there being any trash at all.  Ended up the ice cream cart employee came to help me and we picked up a whole box full, he was very apologetic.

We went back-and-forth all week on whether we would reserve for next year.  In the end we did, although we have a different site now.  We may try calling in January when their reservation rules are relaxed to see if we can get a site closer to the water.  Every year before January only people that have stayed a week can make a new reservation for the following year, and they have 24 hours from checkout to re-reserve their old site.  We only got a different site by waiting 24 hours after the people that were on our new site, left.

I miss the old days, the old prices, and the nearly personal private beach.  But most of the improvements are for the better.  The bar-on-the-beach was nice.  The large air-conditioned bathhouses are 100% better than the old ones.  All sites have full hookups now and its all 100% new.  The new pool is much nicer than the old one (and if you pay more to stay in the "upscale" section you get access to a 2nd pool... but you really only get a paved spot for your extra money and the 2nd pool is much smaller with nothing special compared to the main pool).  The store is way better with a large selection including adult beverages and make-to-order ice cream and grill.  I even bought a large pizza and took it back to the beach for lunch one day.
