Hello everybody my name is Dan I'm fairly new to the Forum. Just purchased a 2017 r-pod 178. The previous owner had modified the dinette table area. They put in a futon type bed. I have all the original cushions with no table. I'm simply trying to put it back to its original configuration. I'm not even sure if I can buy a new table for this camper. Any ideas would be helpful thank you so much

You are not missing much.  I have the foldup table that came with our 2015 179 in the green house as a plant stand. It was always in the way, heavy, and hard to sit at.  I made another one we like a whole lot better.  3/4" plywood 2 ft square for the base, a boat store pedestal socket ,  pedestal and a similar socket mounted on a 3/4" ply on the underside of the plywood top, which is about 6 or so inches bigger than the bottom.  It rides on the bed all apart.  If you live close to Idaho you could get this one out of the greenhouse.  Hardly used.

Yeah the original folding table is heavy...really heavy. It will pinch your fingers badly if you actually try to fold it. And the legs were always in the way when you made an attempt to sit near it... AND on top of all that, the straps that came with it were intended for tying it down during travel...what a pain.

You are much better off to buy a standard pedestal base and buy or make a suitable table top surface.

I sorta like our table. Keep it out of the rain tho or you'll need a new top.

Internet search results from 2010 - It probably isn't current but gets you started.

Scott,

Yes, the new table base is available for your purchase.  I do believe you can use your current table top.  The base is $85.50 plus  http://i.viglink.com/?key=d7d7aa5ced1ebc0821effbccab897fa0&insertId=5ee654cfa64b25ab&type=L&exp=60%3ACI1C55A%3A13&libId=jzvtiltx010009ks000DA7aewepog&loc=http%3A%2F%2Frpodnation.com%2Fare-the-new-retractable-tables-available-to-us_topic2073.html&v=1&iid=5ee654cfa64b25ab&opt=true&out=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.uship.com%2F&ref=https%3A%2F%2Fsearch.yahoo.com%2F&title=Are%20the%20new%20retractable%20tables%20available%20to%20us%3F%20-%20r-pod%20Nation%20Forum%20-%20Page%201&txt=%3Cspan%3Eshipping%3C%2Fspan%3E - shipping .  You may order through my parts administrator Brandie Lamb at 574-642-3119 Ext 209.  We accept Visa or Master Card.

OK thanks for the info. I'll probably work on making my own table and a different type of Base. I'm pretty tall and I was also wondering about legroom.

We had the same bulky, terrible table in our 179. I built a new table with double pedestals from 3/4" birch plywood top and also a plywood base.  It travels on the bed after taking the pedestals apart.  I made it larger than we wanted originally and have gradually cut it down to the size that we want(24x39). It is very stable and much lighter than the original.

I like the wood-grain of your table. Is it some sort of plywood to minimize warping? If so, how did you finish off the raw edges?

Looks to me like standard birch plywood. All big box stores carry it in 4x8 sheets. If you have a lumberyard near you, an even better option is baltic birch plywood. Usually comes in 5x5 sheets. Baltic birch is better quality plywood than the standard stuff sold by Home Depot/Lowes. You can get the edges nice and smooth, then 3 coats of poly and you'd be all set.

Nice job btw Vann!

The very first thing we did was to replace that stupid table with a home built. Man, that thing hurt coming down on your fingers!!!!!

A suggestion.......If you build one, put a table ware drawer on it. (One more drawer freed up)

Ben Herman is correct-it is 3/4" Birch veneer plywood.  I finished it with Tabletop Varnish from Woodworker's supply.  It is a very hard and durable finish.  I used 4 coats with steel wool between coats. It has been very serviceable for us and can be easily repaired if it does get scratched.
Sand the edges carefully and apply the same finish as the top -there are no rough edges or splintering.
I used standard 3/4" B/C grade plywood for the base.  It is cut to fit tight between the ottomans and has some velcro glued to the floor and the underside of the base-it is rock solid. the pedestal base and top are screwed to the plywood top and base with 1"x#12 screws.

I guess it depends on whether you need to maintain the functionality of making this into a bed and how many people you need to seat at a table. But I just bought a two person round pedestal table that comes apart for travel.  The shape give me more room to move around, the base slides right up to the edge of the cushion making it as out of the way as possible.

Echo Gale is correct--the homemade table replacement will not serve as a part of the dinette to create a double bed.  We are a couple and never need the double bed option.  however, the couch can still be used as a single bed and I know personally that it is great for a one person afternoon nap.
one of the beauties of the R Pod is that it is very adaptable for personification to one's needs.

When I did my dinette modification (see my mods link below), I did it specifically so I would be able to use the table as a part of being able to convert the dinette into an additional 3/4 width bed sleeping area (yes, that is a standard size and sheet sets are available for it). For that reason, I reused the table top although I could have made a table top the same size as the original and had it work also. I did that so that if the time came that I could no longer do the crawl over, we would not have to stop camping, but one of us (most likely me) would be able to use the dinette area as a bed. It has not yet reached that point, and it may be that we would upgrade to the 195 or 196 model and avoid the issue. It would still be hard to give up the counter space of our 179 though.

I still have the original table that came with our 179.  If anyone needs it, I am happy to give it to you  if you pay the shipping.  I have to warn you that it is heavy.  If you want to price shipping, I am in zip code 27516.
