My water pump cycles on for a couple of minutes WITHOUT the faucet, shower or commode running. A fellow camper last week said it was probably one of two things: 1. a leak in my fresh water tank, or 2. a bad pressure switch.

I don't see a leak. Anyone know what this pressure switch is? Could that be my problem or could it be something else?

I've had this happen to me but only for a few seconds, usually it happens at 2:00AM and it makes me wake up with a start!

It could be a couple of things, it could be a leaking valve that is letting a slight amount of water pass. Check to see if your toilet is not quite shut off, or the bathroom tap is leaking slightly.

It could also be that your system is just pressurizing again, but then it would only run for a few seconds, not minutes. You might want to see if your black or grey tanks are filling up, the water pump may be filling those up.

I installed a small pressure vessel and it took care of that plus it allows me to run the tap for a short period of time before the pump kicks on.

Let us know what you find.

I think the pressure switch is part of the pump. If your sure there is no leaks it my just be the check valve in the pump letting water back flow. You could take the pump apart and clean it up and that might fix it. They are not complicated.

The pressure switch is on the front of the pump, built in. If your pump is coming on and running for minutes.. that could be the issue. The front housing can be swapped out, 6 screws on most pumps, parts about $20 on Amazon.

If it comes on and runs for only a couple seconds, that almost always means a leak in the system somewhere.To check for a leak, let the system come up to pressure, turn the pump off, wait 24 hours, open a tap. You should have full pressure when you open, if you don't.. then it leaked out somewhere. I have opened systems that sat for a month or more, and were still under full pressure.

Thanks for the responses. I posted my issue after I was home with no water in the fresh tank.

My next trip (in a few weeks) I’ll check these things you’ve mentioned.
