You experienced podders may already realize it but the newer owners may not. We've had our 173 for a year and just realized this. On the front of the sofa on the 173, the "skirting" comes off. You just lift the sofa as if you were putting it down into the bed. But while you have it in the "L" position, simply lift up on the skirt. It is not permanently attached. We are just going to leave ours off for quick access to more storage space. I put a couple of eye hooks at each end of the couch on the existing studs and pulled bungees across. You can fit milk crates or any other container there up to about 13" tall.
