10" memory foam. 8" probably would have been sufficient, but I weigh 280 pounds and didn't want to take a chance on an 8" bottoming out. It does make accessing under the bed and making the bed more difficult due to the extra weight.

I just did a lucid 3 inch gel memory foam topper. Queen size. Will have to trim it a few inches to fit. You can mark it with a sharpie and cut it with an electric knife. Cuts like butter and I am extremely picky very comfortable. I have a trap door to access the water pump and winterization valves. I push the head of the mattress up and use a ratchet type strap to hold it in position just out of the way of the trap door. There are so many choices as you will find out and a very personal choice.

After 3 nights in our 177 we replaced with an 8" EuroTop short-queen mattress from Camping World.  Not cheap but you get what you pay for.  After 8 years (and we use it a minimum of 30 days/year) it is just as firm and comfortable as when the day we purchased it.

We got a custom made 2" memory foam topper at MattressInsider to fit the short queen perfectly. It is awesome.

I guess it depends on your weight. We tried two stacked 2" memory foam toppers and I still bottomed out the mattress.

I went to a local bed manufacturer and had a short queen household bed made.  It is a firm and is just like the one I have at home.  The only problem if it is one is it is fairly heavy.  That said I really it.  Wasn't cheap about $500 but I like it.

10" memory foam Zinus mattress. What a difference from the factory being. Right around $200 on Amazon and worth every penny!

We got this 6" mattress and couldn't be more pleased.  It's comfortable, doesn't raise the bed so high that you need a railing and ladder, and weighs less than the OEM which was absolute junk.  The price went up about $20 since we bought it, but prices in Amazon tend to fluctuate depending on views and sales.   http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07J5HX864/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07J5HX864/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

We purchased the https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B019EMSP5Q/ - Dreamfoam Bedding Chill 6" Gel Memory Foam Mattress . It costs more than the Zinus, but it is made in the USA. We had purchased a Zinus 6" model and it never would expand to the full height, even after more than a week. The Zinus is made in China and it probably had been warehoused too long. I just checked the price for the Dreamfoam though and it now sells for $349, which is about twice what we paid at the time.

I've bought a couple of Zinus foam mattresses for beds at home too, never had a problem with inadequate expansion.  Keeping the temp warm when you open and are expanding it and staying off of it for several days helps a lot with expansion and gets any stinky outgassing over with. I wouldn't want to be in a tight enclosure like an rpod with one that hadn't been allowed to air out first  I agree that they can't be left for very long compressed. Be prepared to request a replacement if you do get unlucky and you get one that doesn't expand, and don't let them tell you just to wait longer, I've never seen one not reach more or less full height in 2-3 days.

We left our mattress in an upstairs bedroom, the warmest part of the house, to expand and air out (pretty much all compressed foam mattresses have some odor) for a month while we waited for our trailer to arrive.  Then we put a mattress cover on it < http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B078QGCR1V/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B078QGCR1V/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 > and put it into the trailer where it sat until our first trip last January.  We've had no problems with expansion or odor.

Like I said, I think I got one that had just been in the warehouse too long and had reached the point where the expansion was just not going to happen, no matter how long I left it. As it was, I ordered it in January of last year. When it did not expand after several days, I contacted Amazon and got a refund. That is when I ordered the Dreamfoam, which expanded in a matter of minutes since it had only been compressed just before being shipped. Even after some time, the Zinus never expanded beyond its initial expansion which was closer to 4-5 inches instead of 6 and one of the corners never expanded beyond 2". I think it all depends on how long it has sat compressed. The longer it sits, the more likely it is to not expand properly. The Dreamfoam box specifically stated to not let it sit compressed, but to unpack it and let it expand as soon as possible to avoid the situation I encountered with the Zinus mattress.

In most cases, the mattress will likely not have sat so long in shipment/storage and will expand. I just happened to have gotten a lemon.

Just curious - did you have to return the mattress?  Wondering about the logistics.

Do you just drag it into Kohl's and slap it onto the counter as an Amazon return???  Star

No, I was instructed to dispose of it, which I did.

We have an 8" Zinus deluxe from Amazon and it's still brutal to get the sheets on...my wife won't even do it any more....it certainly takes some maneuvering on our 177.

6" would have also been good enough I think as well....

We just use flat sheets now (not fitted) and I just jam them down the sides and don't try tuck around the bottom....

I think 6 inches would be fine for smaller folks, my wife barely makes a depression our bedroom foam mattress. Being larger, I didn't want to take the chance of ending up lying on the plywood so we went with the 8 inch. We just tuck in a top sheet too, not worth the effort to try to crawl around getting a fitted sheet on a heavy mattress like that. We would do the same with any mattress I think.

Contrary to the advice of my doctor, I weight about 220.  The 6" dense foam mattress we got to replace the OEM doesn't come close to bottoming out on the strand board base (the OEM did bottom out).  It is easy to change the short queen fitted bottom sheet since the mattress is relatively light and easy to pick up for my wife and me.

My wife doesn't like a very firm mattress so that plays into it too. A softer mattress will compress more.

In reality, either a 6 or 8 inch foam mattress would be a good choice depending on your desired firmness level, size/weight, and tolerance for bedmaking. We're into the realm of personal preference at this point I think.
