Looking for camping suggestions in Nova Scotia for this summer. We like to bicycle back/gravel roads, so any areas that support cycling would be great. Thanks!

We stayed at the Cheticamp campground just inside the Cape Breton Highlands NP and were very happy with the place.

+1 on Cheticamp - great place to use as a base for the area - lots of trails and excursions to take in from there.  Definitely hike the skyline trail and make sure you drive the Cabot Trail in a clockwise direction.  You may want to leave the trailer at the campground and drive the Cabot Trail in a day (a long day but definitely worth it!).  The grades are steep and winding, so going through it without the trailer is much more relaxing.  Please make sure you take in a Ceilidh (Kay-lee) while you are in Cape Breton; a great musical experience.

Further south, the Bridgewater area is very nice (Lunenburg).  Lots of great food and scenery.

Be warned, the distances between areas are deceivingly long - so the distance from Halifax to Cape Breton is a decent day's travel.

Our favorite place to vacation, and we will definitely be going back again.

Enjoy!

When I think Nova Scotia I think Cape Breton.  We have stayed in a hotel in Halifax, but I don't know my way around much at all on the south end of the province.

+1 on doing the Cabot Trail clockwise, and plus 2 or 3 on not taking your trailer!  We often spend most of the day on the east side of the island and have had no trouble getting back to Cheticamp at night.  If you are determined to spend a night on the east side you might want to consider a motel.  You will probably be miserable pulling a trailer around the Cabot Trail.  It will slow you down and the long line of vehicles behind you.  You can be careful enough to overcome the dangers and frustrations, but the drive too magnificent to deal with the stress of pulling a trailer.  The road is definitely not optimized for caravans.

There are scores of side trips.  Among my favorites are Meat Cove and the fort at Louisbourg.  We had dinner there once and still made it back to Cheticamp for the night.  It helps if you enjoy driving though.

Doing this trip in June.  Staying at Mira River prov. park on the east side for 2 nights, exploring that side.  Then going to Baddeck Cabot trail campground for 2 days.  Leaving the pod and doing the Cabot trail.  BUT I will be doing the trail counter clockwise. WHY you ask :)  any sight seeing pull off's will be on the right and you won't have to cross traffic to pull off or on.  Did this trip 30years ago in a tent with 3 kids... Don't have to rush back to work so taking our time this trip.
