Just don't forget to depressurize the water tank - turn on a faucet with the pump off until it quits dripping.  I forgot once and it blew the anode rod and the socket wrench about 15 feet.  Rather impressive.   And then I needed to go get some dry clothing.

Depressurization is a little faster if you slowly open the pressure relief valve on the water heater. I've also found this to be a good thing to do when filling the hot water tank.

Someone I know very well had this happen to him also. Doubt it'll happen to me twice!

A 27mm metric should work pretty well too.

Had to buy a $14 socket but I could only get one in 3/4 inch drive--don't have that so I almost bought a $30 ratchet till I found out you can get an adaptor for 1/2 inch--the struggle continues

I use the same Harbor Freight torque wrench I used to set up my WDH. I don't have an extension, so I use a reducer and an expander hooked together to get the spacing I need between the 1-1/16" socket and the torque wrench. I have to be careful not to over-torque the rod.

Me Again---Does anyone clean the crap off the anode rod with a wire brush or do you just replace it--mine isn't even a year old yet and I'm not sure what they're supposed to look like---Also--do you ever inspect the heating element?  In my area there is a lot of calcium in the water and I have to take them out and use a wire brush on my home water heater elements

If there's still a fair bit of "meat" on the anode then I do not replace it - they usually last me for 2-3 yrs. I use a soft brush and hose w/pressure nozzle. Important to use a hose/nozzle to clean out inside the tank - just stick it in the hole and rinse away until it seems to be running clear.

You must have some very soft water up where you live. Mine don't last that long.

We got a little over two years out of our first one, but that's with only taking the Pod out a few times a year. I finally had to replace it before a rally this past weekend.

I don't clean off the anode rod when checking it because I want to keep as much of the sacrificial magnesium on it as possible.

Has anybody bought aftermarket anode rods? Did you have any problems with them?

I don't travel with water, and empty all water before we head home

Should be fine, its a generic item. I've even gotten them at local hardware stores.

I didn't figure there would be a problem, but one or two reviewers on Amazon complained that the thread size was wrong. I was able to order a 2-pack for the price of a single Suburban-branded one.

I never clean the anode rod. As long as water is in the WH, the anode rod is working. So if you let water set in tank between trips the rod is doing it's job. If you have a high sulphate bacteria count the rod will deteriorate faster. Aftermarket is not important, more important if the rod is magnesium or aluminum, depending upon your water conditions.
