My tow vehicle has autonomous emergency braking and I have been towing for two years without even thinking about it. However, just now realizing perhaps this is not a feature you want on while towing. I think through the dashboard computer, there is a way to disable. I would not think a full on automatic panic brake by computer with trailer in back could have a good outcome. The TV computer does not calculate trailer weight.

Love, love, love this feature when not towing. Has saved us twice already. Good news is all cars will be outfitted with them by 2020, virtually eliminating head on collision deaths, once pre 2020 non outfitted cars are off road. Courtesy of Mr. Obama.

Anyone have information on use of these systems while towing?

Check your owner's manual and the Kia web site to see if they have any helpful information.

Googled subject on internet and not much there with my search words. However did find something that said "adaptive cruise control does not operate trailer brakes". One could infer that autonomous emergency braking also does not activate trailer brakes. I am surprised this is not discussed more frequently, as more and more cars have this great safety feature. It would be good the hear from experts.

Panic stopping in TV, with trailer not braking would be disastrous. in meantime going to figure out how to disable it. Just seems like not a good idea when towing, but fantastic one when not towing.

I am not a Kia expert. BUT - GM advises vehicles equipped with Automatic Braking Systems should be in the ALERT or OFF condition. Automatic braking systems can cause an out of control situation or loss of control if applied. The Auto system overrides any pedal action and most brake controllers have an input from the brake pedal position. Some don't. Personally I would talk to my dealer before I found out it isn't a good idea.

This from an AEB website, still would like dealer inout, "Does AEB work when towing?

Yes, however stopping distances may increase due to the heavy load, so AEB may not be able to avoid the crash. Having AEB should still reduce the speed at the point of impact and this means there will be less force to be absorbed by the vehicle and any object it hits. Reducing impact force reduces the chance of injuries to the people involved."

That kind of leads me to believe it doesn't activate trailer brakes.

BTW Adaptive Cruise Control is another feature.

Sorry.. Obama praise aside, no freeking way its going to prevent head on collisions. It will and has mitigated impact and severity of rear end type collisions.

It wont prevent all collisions but will almost eliminate deaths from them. Many more people die this way then from gunshots. Truly game changing technology meant to save lives. Helped me avoid 2 collisions already (not towing). Still seeking answer from Kia but my VIN # wont take on their contact page so cant message them this way. I'll have to call. Not something I want a car salesman to supply information about. I also have adaptive cruise control and yes know the difference, but if ACC doesnt activate trailer brakes not confident AEB will either.

Kia corporate has no information nor the owners manual. I've now emailed the brake controller company. With more and more vehicles coming with AEB systems, and soon all cars, surprised there is not more public info on this. Certainly the Kia salesman the last person to ask. I want an official statement in writing and hopefully never have to have AEB activate when towing in meantime.

Just heard back from Tekonsha (sp?) rep, manufacturer of brake controller. If AEB activates brake lights then it will activate trailer brakes too at same rate of deceleration. Good info since more and more vehicles are coming with this great safety try echnology.

Here is official reply from Tekonsha; maker or my Voyager Brake Controller.

Thank you for contacting Tech Support. If the AEB turns on the brake lights, in a panic stop, the control would apply the trailer brakes, based on your rate of deceleration. This would be safe, because your trailer is braking, also. If the brake lights do not come on, there is a potential for jack knifing, of the trailer. Without knowing the status of the brakes lights, I cannot recommend leaving the AEB on or shutting it off. If I can be anymore help, please let me know.

Dan
