You're doing right.  Is the propane on?  Can you light the stove?  If so, give the WH a while to try to light itself.  There could be air in the line that will take several lighting attempts to purge.

Do you know you have water in the WH tank?

+1 to Tars Tarkas... I usually take the time to light the stove first to get most of the air out of the line first since it takes a while before it's all purged out.
When running the water heater on propane you should be able to hear the burner going as it heats.

I think I figured it out.  It was on electric and I wasn’t turning the switch off on the outside switch when I was trying to run it on propane. When we bought it I wasn’t told about the inside and outside switches. So to run on electric inside switch off outside switch on and just opposite to run on propane. Sound right?

To run on gas the inside switch must be on. The red light should come on briefly and go out when the burner lights. To run on electric the outside switch must be on and the Pod plugged in to shore power. However, the two modes are completely independent. There is no interaction. You can run on gas and electric simultaneously, which will heat water almost twice as fast. If the gas switch is on and propane is present it will run regardless of the electric switch, and vice versa. If the electric is on and powered but propane is absent the red light will stay but the electric element will still heat. If both electricity and propane are present both heaters will operate until temperature is reached, after which the electric element will maintain the temp by itself.

Where is the switch located to turn electric on?  I have a 179.

The switch is on the outside of the WH, probably almost hidden under a tube, in the bottom left, as I recall.  It may have a cotterkey through it to prevent it from being switched by mistake.  Be sure you have water in the tank before turning it on.
