Not really. So-called on demand water heaters have no tank whatsoever. The R-pod water heater has ~~ 6 gallon tank. It's small, but not really on demand.

Is it always on or is there a switch? I guess the switch hear the entrance door is for gas on and off.

As you said, the switch near the entrance door is for turning on the gas supply and ignition to the water heater. There is also an electric switch located inside the water heater access door on the exterior of the pod. This is to turn on the electric heating element in the water heater. The switch is on the left side and looks like a minature black rocker switch and usually has a cotter pin in it to stop a mistaken turn on.

You can use the electric element if you have a power supply and can use gas whether or not you have electric hook ups.  Some people use both to the water hot faster.

Many people use both the gas, and the electric switched on, as it makes hot water a little faster with both systems running. It will still only heat 6 gallons at a time and then turn off.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  DON'T turn the switches on unless you have water in the tank.

This is mainly true of the electric switch because the element will likely burn out. The propane switch probably won't hurt anything except your propane supply needlessly.
