Hey guys, we are picking up our new 2018 176 R-pod in the morning. I have seen several posts about slide-out covers, but I was wondering what their purpose was. Is it necessary that we get one? If so, what is the best?

We are new to the slide-out world.

Keeps debris off the top off the slide, keeps rain away from the roof opening.

Also helps preserve the top seal because it blocks UV light. Also, it will act as a shade when the sun is beating down; I don't think the slide has as much insulation as the rest of the camper.

That being said in the 7 years we have owned our 177 we have never had an issue of rain coming in due to a heavy thunderstorm.  Leaves apparently are kept out when we bring the slide 'in.' Just last week I took a physical look at the rubber seal on top, still in excellent condition . . .no cracking or dryness noted.  We haven't seen a need for the cover although many people have added this feature to their pod.

We have a number of trees in our yard. The cover I made helps keep these along with small sticks which get blown down in the wind off the top of the slide-out. It does also seem to help with heat as it provides an air gap between it and the top of the slide-out, shading it in the process. I had originally gotten up on a ladder with a Swiffer (TM) and swept the leaves, etc. off the top of the slide-out. Now, I still get up there, but it is to pull the cover off prior to retracting the slide-out.
