We needed a shelf over the bed. Unfortunately, I could not match out trim color with the “Lowe’s Shelf
Mod“. So I made a torsion box style shelf and matched the stain.   In case it’ll anyone has the same problem, here are some picture of what I did.  It is very sturdy.

This is the inside.  Ribs made of 3/4" plywood.  Top and bottom are 1/2 plywood.

Here it is installed

I used brackets to attache the shelf to the walls.  There was a stud running horizontally above the window.  I was able to get one screw on each bracket in a stud.  There was a stud running horizontally above the window.

Good question.  It feels like a hollow core door.   I didn't weight it and there is no way I'm taking it back out Smile  I calculated the plywood weight and got 22.1 lbs.  I think it weighs 25 lbs with the wood trim, glue, and nails.

H 1.75
L 72

W 18
Number of long ribs 4
Number of Sheets 2

Surface weight 12.78 lbs

Thanks. One more question: How did you match the stain? Would you please list the formula? I thought I had seen it before, but couldn't find it. I got close on my last attempt, but it still was not right.

Here is the Sherwin-Williams formula for the rpod dark brown colored wood.  Will need to build up 3 to 4 coats to get results that match.

Thanks for the formula. I took a draw front to Lows to get a match and they didn't come closed.

If you want to match a Sherwin-Williams mix, you need to have them do it.  And they have pretty good quality products anyway.  Just wait until the monthly 30% discount rolls around before you do it.

Some paint stores do better at paint matching than others. The people at Lowes, or HD, or maybe ACE do paint as a side-line. If I was trying to get a color match, I would go to Sherwin Williams, or Benjamin Moore, or Kelly Moore.

LOL! I've wondered the same thing! In the nearby town of Woodside, the Benjamin Moore and Kelly Moore paint stores are across the street from each other. Is this sort of like the GM/Chevrolet/Buick/Pontiac/Oldsmobile strategy of selling the same product under different "brands" to increase market share?

You left off Cadillac, Saturn, Opel, Holden, Wuling, LaSalle, McLaughlin, Oakland, Hummer, Vauxhall, and Saab [which was a good car 'til GM purchased it]. ;--)   Uh oh, the thread drift police will come for us!

So back to matching paint:  At some point, I'm going to go to Sherwin-Williams to get a good match and re varnish all the wood that's getting banged up and will fill the holes from all the stuff I've removed such as the tele.  I wish they'd come up with a paint that would stick to the vinyl walls but I don't think that's in the offing.

Vinyl is almost impossible to get paint to stick to (and stay stuck).
