Hey all,
I am thinking I might want to get a propane fire pit for camping. I'm really tired of buying wood all the time. It's expensive, and, many times I end up with wet wood that burns like crap cause they leave it uncovered outside. I wonder if any of you have one, or, have an opinion on whether it's a good or bad decision. I can't imagine it's a bad thing, but I also wonder how often i'll need to refill the propane. I don't want to be getting propane everyday. I mostly like to sit out by the fire for a couple hours at night, so I would hope i could get atleast a weeks worth of fires on a twenty pound tank. Any opinions?

I have seen a couple while at different campgrounds. Don't know to much about them. Do they have any built in anti mosquito component? Some of our favorite camping places such as campgrounds around Vermont, Chincoteaque,VA or Cape Hatteras, NC have mosquitoes the size of small planes!! They all come out around dusk  Thumbs Down

My son has one he uses at home.  He really likes it, and they use it quite a bit in the few days we have here that aren't winter.  I think he fogs for bugs and the pit is just that with no bug protection.  It will drain a 20 pound tank in one evening.

We bought ours at Costco for 100.00, last year at the northwest round up we had a burn ban, which ment no camp fires, but we were aloud to use the propane fire pit. Had a few visitors around our fire

I think it all depends on whether you like chocolate or vanilla.  There have been propane pits at some bluegrass festivals we’ve attended.  They’re nice in that there’s no smoke chasing you around if you’re playing in a circle plus you don’t have to add wood or stoke the fire.  But for me it’s too vanilla as there’s no leaping flames, popping or hissing of the wood as it burns or the best part late in the evening as the coals glow red hot then fading, giving off the last of their energy, dimming to a soft glow and crackling as they cool; announcing the end of the day, time to say goodnight to all with whom you’ve shared the days events.  Time for sweet slumber, drifting off while recounting the friendships and the music.

Too each their own I guess.

Wow!  20 lbs in a night!  Is that cranked all the way up for 4 hours or what?

If we're going to have a fire I prefer a "real" fire, plus we already carry around so much stuff.... but I have been in parks that don't allow open fires.  Propane firepits are okay though.  I guess the rationale is they don't throw sparks.

What about things like the https://duraflame.com/products/fire-logs/ - Duraflame logs? Since these are not untreated, you would be able to bring them with you. There is even one for use when one wants to roast marshmallows or other food items.

Another alternative might be one of the gel-fuel (alcohol) fire pits if you don't want to burn up a lot of propane.

The Biolite stuff is great.  I have a small one that heats water and provides USB for either a light or as a charger.  Pretty cool idea for places w/o power.  The one I have is very well made and works great.

The Biolite is very cool for the “next generation” but I’am an early Boomer and can not wrap my head around a fire pit with a USB port, no smoke, and LED lights around the campfire.  Sorry, but i’ll stay with my redneck fire pit made from a stainless steel washer drum.

Too old to change.

Please don’t misunderstand as I do keep up with technology being that it’s fundamental to our lifestyle and asset management.  That said we don’t let it become an encumbrance to said lifestyle and traditions we hold dear.  As an example, we “cut the core” as it relates to cable & satellite TV and now use WiFi for most programming and a high gain TV antenna for HD local broadcasters.  At the other end of the spectrum I dumped Facebook as it became an intrusive annoyance.

All that said, I’ll keep our “red neck” fire pit, play my mandolin and howl at the moon just the same.  Thank you LOL

Well, I have ordered it. I got enough good feedback that i'd say 2 to 1 people recommend the propane pit. It will be great for camping, or on the deck at home. I may use it on low inside the dome in the fall on those beginning and end of the year camping trips. Many people said they use them if there are fire bans. I also think it will be great if we stay at the casino R.V. lot, or if we stop over at a walmart type stop at night. When we do our Washington D.C. gettysburg trip, we plan atleast one or two nights of stopping at a store/restaurant lot.

Mjilrod,

I have a 4 port propane valve with a 5' and 12' hose Part # 59123, I can run grill, or another propane device and an auxillary tank, mounts on your present tank. Lot of the big coaches have them.

My first interest in a propane pit was last 4th of july. It absolutely poured. We scurried into the dome and were cozy, but, the across from us was sitting under his awning, with a fire. I was envious. I kinda forgot about it until one night this fall when I stayed in the casino lot, and a class A across from us had their propane pit going. I thought how nice it was to be able to just have a fire like that. Long story short, I have been thinking about it since. Just HAD to do it. But thought i'd atleast ask if there are any reason it's a bad idea. I think i might want to get a second 20 pound tank on the tongue.

I received the Outland fire bowl propane fire pit wednesday. It's nice looking, and looks well made. I got the 19 inch model and they say it can run 11 hours on a 20 lb tank. I'm gonna fire it up on the deck later and see how it goes.

The tank for my son's firepit gets so cold it froze the grass it was sitting on and it took weeks to recover.  He now sets it on a rock and the problem is solved.

I have a CAMCO Lil Red propane pit, very small and self contained, what I liked about it was it's rated at 65000 BTUs, has an 8' foot hose and a cooktop is available, runs off a 1lb bottle with adapter. Takes up no space in back of truck. Perfect for two folks in the evening.

1) I want to get the fire pit going, and was going to do it today, but, it snowed.
2) I will video it, but, Like the post i saw here before, said it would be easier to set up billboards along every road........ than figure out how to post here.
3) Mcarter? your pit runs on a 1 pound can? 65000 btu? wow, mine is 58000 btu and they say a 20 pound  tank lasts 11 hours. A 1 pound must run out in less than 1/2 hour?

Don't disagree, all run with 1 lb with adapter. Have mine because it is compact. No argument, I have an extra tank I carry.

Just as a note.. if it's running at 58,000 btus, it can't run for 11 hours on a 5 gallon tank.
There are 21,548 btus in a pound of propane. 20 x 21,548 = 430,960
430,960 / 58,000 = 7.43 ....

A case of "your mileage may vary" fur?  The literature said between 8 and 11 hours, depending on low or high flame. Even at 8 hours, thats 2 good 4 hour fires for 12 - 13 bucks. Still cheaper, and definately less hassle than wood (i hope)

Ok, i'm going to try to post a short video. I have a shareable link for google pictures i'm trying. As you'll see (maybe) this is the Outland fire bowl deluxe 19 inch 58,000 btu version. They make a 24 inch 65,000 version if you want huge. They also offer the premier model which is the 19 inch with a built in ignitor. This video was shot right when i lit it for the first time, so it was still brand new. Now that it has run for about an hour, the flames are really much bigger. I guess the pumice needs a slight break in period. So it gives off much more flame then it first did.

Looks nice. One wouldn't mistake it for a wood fire, but it is quite attractive. At night, it should look impressive.

I got 3 1/2 hours of burn time yesterday, and of course it started to rain. At that point I was at about 1/2 the tank gone. So I would guess 7 - 8 hours per 20 pound tank on medium.
