We would like to go west again next summer.  We lived in Lompoc when I was stationed at Vandenberg AFB and spent a good bit of time in Summerland where my parents lived.  We would like to visit this area now that the fire has spared most of the community.

It has been over 20 years since I have been in that part of the state and am wondering if any Podders have experience camping around Santa Barbara.  I would appreciate suggestions.

Thanks!

We were down at Montana de Oro about 80-90 miles north of there earlier this year. Relatively small, but neat little campground there. Right next to Moro Bay and San Luis Obispo. The park is great too.

We were out there 2 weeks ago. At the time US 101 was closed around Ventura due to fires and mud slides. We did not hear about effects on local parks.

I remember, growing up in SoCal, how much we loved camping at Carpentaria State Park. But, haven't been there in years.

Keep checking conditions as fires and rains have left a lot of damage.

Thanks.  I have been watching carefully the fire/flood problems.  I grew up in Summerland which is near the major flooding in Monticeto, and I went to school in Carpinteria.  A big chunk of the park in Carpinteria was damaged by the flooding, and I don't know if it will be ready by summer.  I am concerned that we may have to make other plans for this summer.  Much of what we wanted to visit has changed with fire/floods.

We went to Big Sur on the 18th-21st. It was great as I remember -- but chilly. It was in good shape.

It sounds like you know the area really well! But just wanted to be sure you know about the official (California State Parks) website. I checked it this morning and it includes info about closures for some sections of the cg and other reservations-related info. The website for you or anyone else who needs it is  http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=599 - http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=599

I'm not real familiar with Santa Barbara, but here is a link to camping in Ventura County, including Carpinteria State Beach, which I believe is in Santa Barbara County. Chttp://www.ventura.org/visitors/campgroundsounty.
